#AdoptionDiscrimination #WorkplaceSupport #EmpathyMatters Hey there, everyone! I wanted to share my experience and get your thoughts on something that's been weighing heavily on me. As an adoptee who reconnected with my biological family over 20 years ago, Iâve developed a significant bond with them. Unfortunately, I lost my biological dad in May, and it hit me hard. I was on my way to work when I found out, and after telling my boss, her response was shocking: âOh, but not like your real dad, so you can work." ð¢ Honestly, I was in disbelief and just stunned. This was my first experience with parental loss, and I felt pressured to work my shift. Fast forward a bit, and I noticed something that really upset me: since then, four of my coworkers have lost family members, and they were all granted time off, condolence cards, and, in one case, even pay! Yet, I was expected to work the day of my dadâs memorial, with barely any leeway to adjust my schedule. I can't help but wonder: **Is... Is My Adoption Status Leading to Workplace Discrimination? #JobHunting #FreeLabor #WorkplaceEthics #FreelanceLife Hey everyone! ðâï¸ I just wanted to share a pretty wild experience I had during my job search last year. So, I applied to this marketing firm, and as part of their interview process, they asked me to whip up a communications plan for a new social media service they were launching. I spent a good amount of time on itâfive pages of solid ideas, strategies, and all that jazz. They were super impressed! ð But then, out of nowhere, they decided they didnât have the budget for the role anymore. I was bummed but understood; it's a tough world out there. So, I took back access to the Google doc and moved on. Fast forward about three days, and they shot me an emailâfurious that they could no longer access my plan. Apparently, they wanted to roll it out the next month! ð³ I calmly reminded them that since the plan was part of a skills assessment for a job I didnât get, they couldnât just use my work for free. So hereâs the scoop: A new team member emailed me on Thursday at 11 AM, just two days before their starting date, asking to push it back by a week. ð± They were all set to start the following Monday. I shot them a quick reply explaining that itâs not ideal since weâve got group onboarding planned for a bunch of new hires, and weâd like everyone to be there. They came back with a pretty apologetic response, citing a family function they just found out aboutâit's out of town and, oh yes, it's during the festive season. Now, hereâs the thing: I personally think itâs a bit of a poor move to ask for such a significant change at the last minute. ð¤ I mean, unless itâs an absolute emergency, would you even consider pushing a start date back? With over 120 employees, I set up this initiative to ensure everyone has access to free flu vaccines, but here's the kicker: only 1 person signed up! ð As the only HR person managing this event for the first time, I had 20 time slots available, plus room for walk-ins.
