Your Personal Data Privacy in the Age of AI

Your Personal Data Privacy in the Age of AI

When social media apps became popular and were massively adopted, the artificial intelligence field was still in development. You may have set up your apps years (or even decades) ago and never revisited the settings. Now may be the time to update your data privacy choices!

With the AI revolution underway, Generative AI (GenAI) models have already been trained on publicly available information. Now, they require new data to further their education and optimize their performance. As a result, some social media companies have started adding new AI-related options in their Data Privacy section, defaulting to your approval for them to use your personal data for AI training, rather than giving you the choice to opt in.

There is no Federal regulation around AI in the USA yet, so if you do not want your personal data to be used for machine learning (ML) you will need to opt out. I checked the social media apps I use most frequently, and only two have added AI training choices so far. I’m including instructions below in case you need guidance on how to turn these options off.

Yet another clear example of why we need governance around AI in the USA… What do you think? I look forward to hearing your thoughts… #EverydAI #Better AI for a #BetterWorld VxM AI

Thank you, Veronika! This is becoming more and more common, and is happening right here with LinkedIn using our interactions for AI training as a negative option, or opt out. Everyone should read these steps Veronika lays out here.
