I didn’t go straight to university after school for a few reasons including that I was in a rock band and we wanted to see if it would go somewhere. It almost did, but we didn’t quite get there.

So I worked for three years after school and my day job was how I got into project management. But I reached a point where I decided I wanted to go to university. I applied in secret. I didn’t tell anyone. I didn’t tell my friends. I didn’t tell my parents.

And then one day I had to say to my dad, ‘could you drive me to Nottingham tomorrow?’

He asked why and I replied, ‘because I want to go to a university interview and I don’t want to talk about it!’

I had this dream for something different to what I was doing. I didn’t want everyone else’s opinion on it. I didn’t want them to try and push me into a university I didn’t feel comfortable with. I wanted it to be something that I chose for myself because it was really the right fit.

I think this is part of having an entrepreneur personality. We don’t want to follow other people’s rules or do what others are doing. We want to find our own way. But often we fear being talked out of the route we are planning, or that others just won’t understand what we’re trying to do and why it matters to us. They will want us to stay the people we are, doing the things they expect from us.
