What Top Talent Really Wants and How To Retain Them
In the face of volatility in the financial world and a highly competitive labour market, how can you find and keep the talent you need without simply throwing more money at the problem?
If thatâs the question you are asking, youâre on the right track. Make no mistake, cash will attract top talent, but its effectiveness as a retention tool is shaky at best.
You would think money would trump all. But the trick is not merely to attract the brightest and best. You also want to keep them! This is the more challenging part and the more profitable one.
The key to winning the war for talent is to shift our thinking from what âwe have to offer,â to âwhat top talent really values.â
Top Talent wants better leaders. Doesnât everyone want a better boss? Sure, but for Top talent, it is absolutely vital. Top talent has far more choice in who they'll work with so they will almost always choose an organisation with great leaders.
2. Future Direction
Top talent wants a brighter future. The people who are your top performers have more of a future orientation than do average performers. Therefore, they enter a job interview with a different set of questions: How will this role better prepare me for future opportunities? What will I learn? How will I be challenged? How will I grow?
Top talent wants to be challenged, wants to have opportunities, wants to know how you will support their personal growth.
3. Vision
Top talent wants a bigger vision. Talented, driven people want to be part of something bigger than themselves. They are searching for organisations who they can feel a sense of connection with â a personal resonance. Leaders also help connect people to the vision and celebrate progress along the way.
