What to look for in a social media manager?

I see articles on how to choose a real estate agent and the cost of hiring or not hiring a professional when choosing to sell your home, but what about the person hired to market that listing? OR to market that real estate brokerage or team? That's a make it or break it job for a company.

I've recently heard people say that they could turn it over to a high school student or a college student because they would be teachable and it would cost less to hire someone like that. Wonder what that would look like if someone selling their home decided to go with the cheapest option instead of the most qualified option. Hmmm . . . Social media is most often the FIRST impression someone will get of you, your team and/or brokerage. Call me crazy, but to me, that is SO important.

When ready to hire here are some things I would definitely look for -

  1. Someone who has been in the business and has experience. I know there are people who believe the younger generation is more up to date on the platforms, but are they? Are they in a BUSINESS sense or are they in a PERSONAL sense? There's a BIG difference between those two areas.
  2. Someone with a strong work ethic and who knows social media is NOT a 9 to 5 job. It is checking in periodically and that means off hours and even weekends when they can.
  3. Someone who knows the VALUE of what they are doing. As I said earlier, social media can destroy your business or grow your business. It depends on the approach and the person who is the voice for you on the platforms.
  4. Someone who is vesting time in learning every week about new tools and platform changes. It is one job that you can't be idle with. The learning is constant and if you ever get to the point where you think you know everything then you are soon to be out of a job.
  5. Someone who invests money into their business and buys and tries the latest technology. To stand out you have to be different and so that social media manager has to be looking for NEW tools to help you stand out. That's part of the job.

So that's it from me. What would you add fellow marketers? If you need help with your social media, please reach out. I'd love to speak with you.
