WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK

Governing AI for Humanity

All major decisions made about what artificial intelligence can do (and how it’s deployed) are exclusively in the hands of a few tech companies.

That’s why the world desperately needs global governance for AI.

The UN Secretary-General convened experts (including yours truly) to develop policy recommendations for an inclusive, global system to address the risks surrounding the technology’s global deployment.

We suggest creating an international scientific panel on AI—much like how the IPCC tackles global challenges stemming from climate change—plus deliver six other urgent policy recommendations.

Israel detonates Hezbollah walkie-talkies a day after pager attack

How far ahead technologically is Israel compared to Iran? The answer to this question is becoming a lot more important.

On Tuesday this week, Israeli intelligence caused thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah to explode across Lebanon.

On Wednesday, hundreds more were injured following walkie-talkie detonations across the country.

The world is waiting anxiously to see how Hezbollah responds. The Israeli Defense Minister says the country is “opening a new phase in the war” and Hezbollah’s leader called the attacks “a declaration of war.”

Russian election interference efforts focus on the Harris-Walz campaign

According to Microsoft’s Threat Analysis Center, Russian influence operations are ramping up against the Harris/Walz campaign, with fabricated videos generating millions of views online.

A reminder that Putin’s “endorsement” of Kamala Harris was nothing but propaganda.

EU to help Ukraine repair damaged power generation facilities to meet 15% of its needs

This week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the bloc will be sending a new round of assistance to Ukraine.

Not only will the €160 million from frozen Russian assets be sent to Ukraine, but a fuel power plant in Lithuania will also be dismantled and sent to the war-torn country.

It’s safe to expect Russia to try to blow up that one as well.

THE GZERO WORLD WE’RE JUST LIVING IN

THE GRAPHIC TRUTH

YOUR GZERO WORLD

On “GZERO World,” I delved into the modern space race and its role as a critical domain for global security with Arizona Senator and former astronaut Mark Kelly. We discuss China’s growing ambitions, the future of the International Space Station, and the evolving role of private companies like SpaceX in shaping US space policy.

Kelly is clear-eyed about China’s ambitious space goals, including lunar missions and collaboration with Russia to build a lunar base, sparking concerns over the militarization of space. “They [China] just returned a sample from the backside of the moon. Nobody’s done that.” Senator Kelly also discusses the International Space Station’s eventual decommissioning and the importance of international cooperation, particularly with allies such as Europe, Canada, and Japan. Yet, tensions, especially with adversaries like China and Russia, loom large in the space domain.

“We’ve got to make sure that we can counter their capability, but also… prevent them from using space as a domain in any future conflict,” Kelly tells me. A key concern is how space assets, such as spy satellites and anti-satellite weapons, could be used in future conflicts. The conversation also touches on private-sector involvement in space, with companies like SpaceX playing pivotal roles in both space exploration and geopolitical issues, including the role of Starlink in the war in Ukraine. “I would hope that US companies… align with us and our values,” Kelly tells me.

In the meantime, of late, Thai, Malaysia Chinese currency and most stock mkts here are rallying, for no real regional reasons...same with their currencies.! Something big beyond Western biased news seems to be going on...as Asian currencies are/keep rallying! Often a leading predictor, indicator. Similar vs. CHF, traditionally a safe heaven money.

It's crucial that we take a proactive approach to AI risks just like we did with climate change; global cooperation is key.
