Unexpected Places to Build Your Networks

Unexpected Places to Build Your Networks

What are the most unexpected places where networking occurs?

Of course, when you attend a networking event or join a social group you anticipate that you will gain a few new contacts, as these are geared towards bringing people together. But have you thought about the potential that comes through other opportunities? There are ways to build your networks in your daily activities that you may not have considered.

Networking can happen anywhere that you interact with people. Sometimes you may not realize you are doing it! And your most important connections are often created when you least expect them.

You know that conversation you had with your neighbor this morning while walking your children to the bus stop? That is networking. And when you were at the football game last week and had a friendly chat with the guy sitting behind you? Yes, that’s networking!

Think about it. During the walk to the bus, you told your neighbor you needed a babysitter for the weekend. By the afternoon, she introduced you to someone who could do it. You just made a new connection.

Or the talk at the football game led to a discussion about the need to update your company website. He told you about the fantastic agency he uses for his business, and you hired them. You just started a new business relationship.

This is what networking is all about! Providing value and something worthy to others, whether you have just met them — or known them for years.

Now, you didn’t necessarily go into these situations or interactions specifically looking to make a new contact. But it does happen, and more often than you think! Many connections are made by chance and then turn into long-lasting relationships.

Want to know another unexpected place where networking often occurs? When you are standing in line. This is advice I especially like to offer those who consider themselves an introvert. You may not think of being in line for food or the bathroom at a social gathering as the best place to connect with others, but in fact, it is.

It’s a great excuse to be close to someone and have a conversation, without having to summon up the courage to approach a person out of the blue. Not only that, once it’s your turn in line, it affords you a quick and graceful exit if you’re not interested in continuing the discussion.

Consider all the interactions you encounter throughout your daily routine. You most likely have been creating connections! And now that you realize it, make it work to your advantage.

Becoming more aware of the unexpected ways to build your networks opens you up to many opportunities and increases your spheres of influence. When you go into situations with the right networking mindset, positive things come your way! And you improve your personal and professional life.
