“You cannot be what you cannot see” is a phrase that is regularly used in arguments for diversity and inclusion.

When Barack Obama became President of the US, there were many black and brown people who were amazed that someone like them would be President of the US. It suddenly became possible not only for Barack but for all people like him.

The same is true in our corporations - having people from different ethnicities, sexual orientation, religion, gender, etc, in senior positions, gives permission for others that are the same, to dare.

This is something that I hear from many of the women that I coach…

“Sonia, there are no role models for me”

“Sonia I don’t want to do it the way they do”

“Sonia I can’t aspire to that. I’m happy where I am”

And that last one is the one that kills me…

Yes, if you are truly happy with what you have and how you have organised your life, of course that’s ok. But there are so many times that actually what I am hearing is women settling and putting a ceiling on their ambitions because they don’t believe it’s possible to do more or different.

So how do we help women remove those self imposed ceilings (there are plenty that will be imposed for you and you will need to break through still!) and go first?  How do we encourage women to show up how they want to show up and have the courage and strength to do things their way?

Someone has to go first!

Well one way is to do it with others.

Women can be notoriously bad at supporting each other in the corporate world. Maybe it’s because they are thrown into a situation where they have to compete…  But when women come together with the intention of supporting each other to grow, there is nothing more powerful.

I will shortly be opening up an opportunity to work together with like minded women who want to grow in their careers and their lives and know that they would benefit from the support of other women on a similar journey.  It will be a year-long journey supported by myself as your coach and guide and will provide you with the opportunity to learn from and support other women and create that community where you can feel supported, positively challenged and definitely not alone.  We need women to step up and be the role models that we are lacking. This is a way to go for it.

For now, if you are interested to know more just send me a message and we can take it from there.
