Top Tips For Nonprofit Leaders From Nonprofit Leaders!

Being a nonprofit leader is an incredible journey filled with opportunities to learn, grow, and make a meaningful difference! Every experience along the way shapes you into a stronger, more effective leader.

We asked our Frame Up For Funding alumni for their top tips and here are some invaluable insights shared by them.

Here is what those experienced nonprofit leaders who have successfully navigated this path had to share!

⭐ Embrace Lifelong Learning and Miracles

“This is a career choice where you will:

  • Have a lifetime full of learning - don't be afraid of what you don't yet know.
  • Witness true miracles.
  • Meet a few true angels.
  • Get to sharpen your skills on setting priorities - the two most important are first to prioritize efforts that truly help the organizational mission and to let go of the rest, and second, to maintain a healthy work-life balance for you and your family.”

- Jane Langa Miller , President of Purpose Driven Transitions

Leading a nonprofit means you’re constantly learning and growing. Along the way, you'll witness amazing miracles and meet truly inspiring people. Keep an open mind and stay curious—every experience is a chance to learn something new and wonderful.

Embracing a lifelong learning mindset enriches your leadership and empowers your team to innovate and adapt. By valuing each lesson and miracle, you foster a culture of continuous improvement and hope within your organization.

⭐ Grant Yourself Grace

“Give yourself grace. We are all on a journey and you will make mistakes, when you do take a breath, give yourself grace, and keep moving forward.”

- Crystal Givens, MBA , President & CEO of Starfish Initiative

Challenges and mistakes are part of any nonprofit journey. What’s important is to give yourself grace! Learn from your setbacks, take a deep breath, and keep moving forward with kindness towards yourself.

Self-compassion not only helps you bounce back stronger but also shows your team that mistakes are an opportunity to grow. Resilience and self-compassion are key to sustaining your leadership and inspiring your team.

Remember, every leader faces obstacles. It's how you handle them that defines your success.

⭐ Build a Supportive Community

“Find a community of like-minded people and ASK for HELP!! You don’t have to do it all by yourself! There are people who have done this before and want to help!!”

- Carrie Schmitt , Founder of Love Like Jackson

You don’t have to do it all alone! Surround yourself with a community of like-minded individuals who can offer support, advice, and encouragement.

Sharing experiences and seeking help from others who have been there can make a world of difference. A strong support network provides fresh perspectives and valuable insights that can help you navigate challenges.

Lean on your community, and don't hesitate to reach out—collaboration and mutual support are powerful tools in achieving your mission.

⭐ Embrace Failure and Perseverance

“Don't be afraid to fail, keep your ‘why’ in front of you, and don't quit. The road winds in ways that you may not understand but follow the peace and keep moving forward.”

- LaTonya Thomas , Volunteer Engagement Coordinator of Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County

Don’t be afraid to fail. Keeping your mission in focus and persevering through challenges can lead to great success. Consider every failure as a stepping stone to learning and growth! Stay true to your “why” and keep pushing forward with determination and optimism.

Remember, the path to success is rarely a straight line. It’s filled with twists and turns that shape and strengthen your leadership. Let each setback fuel your resilience and commitment to making a difference.

⭐ Strategic Tracking and Learning

“Track everything! How many, how often, how much. What happened, what was learned, what has improved?”

- Erica Williams, MBA , Executive Director of A Red Circle

Keeping track of key metrics is essential for your nonprofit’s success. By monitoring program outcomes, community engagement, and financial health, you can make informed decisions that drive your mission forward.

Document what happened, what you learned, and what has improved. Continuous learning and adaptation help ensure your organization remains effective and impactful.

Using this data to tell your story also showcases your progress to donors and stakeholders, building trust and credibility!

⭐ Align Actions with Core Values

“Remember the word nonprofit is your HOW, not your WHY! Keep your why out front because it’s definitely priceless, and the motivation to keep going in a nonprofit structure.”

-Dr. Marty, Board Member of Purpose Earth

Always stay connected to your organization's core values!

Aligning your actions with your mission builds trust and credibility with your stakeholders. This commitment to your purpose inspires confidence and fosters long-term sustainability.

Keeping your purpose at the forefront of your efforts reminds everyone involved why the work matters, motivating your team and supporters alike. This unwavering focus on your mission is the driving force that propels your organization forward.

⭐ Harness Social Media for Visibility

“Be visible on social media and remember the saying: No money. No mission.”

- Karen S Hoffman , Founder of Gateway to Dreams

In today’s digital world, being visible on social media is crucial for connecting with a wider audience, sharing your inspiring stories, and engaging with potential supporters directly.

Effectively leveraging social media platforms can amplify your impact, ensuring your message resonates with those who can contribute to and champion your mission. Engaging regularly on these platforms builds community and reinforces your nonprofit’s presence in the digital landscape, driving awareness and support for your cause.

Grant grace is such a good point! Lord knows we need it, and no one is perfect. No organization, nothing is perfect. There should be standards, but also some grace in leadership.
