Top 12 Popular Trekking In Nepal

Going trekking in Nepal? Let’s help you with a snapshot overview of what’s likely the twelve best treks in Nepal. At least, they are currently the most popular treks in Nepal, based on number of trekkers. Here are few popular trekking in Nepal

  EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK

The trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC) is possibly the most dramatic and picturesque in the Nepal Himalaya. Not only will you stand face to face with Mount Everest, also known as Sagarmatha, “Goddess Mother of the Earth” at 8,850 m (29,035 ft), but you will be following in the footsteps of great mountaineers such as Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

Days are filled with captivating, ever-changing mountain scenery, colourful prayer wheels, while negotiating herds of yaks and swing bridges straight out of an Indiana Jones movie.  A great sense of anticipation builds as you trek up the Kumbu Valley, passing through intriguing Sherpa villages, Tibetian monasteries, all towered over by some of highest and most stunningly beautiful mountains of the world. In the evenings you will be rewarded with delicious Nepalese cuisine around the dining-room fire while sipping Sherpa tea and conversing with other like-minded travelers.

 ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT TREK

The Annapurna Circuit trek is one of Nepal’s most known and classical trek routes. The Annapurna section is a 55 km long massif, connected by the Kali Gandaki Gorge in the west, the Marshyangdi river on the north and east, and the Pokhara valley on the south. In addition to the the Annapurna I peak - the worlds 10th highest peak, at 8,091 m (26,545 ft) – being able to view 13 peaks above 7,000 m (22,970 ft) and 16 peaks over 6,000 m (19,690 ft) there is a good reason why the Annapurna Circuit trek is one of Nepal’s most famous trekking routes.

The entire Annapurna Circuit lies within the 7,629 km2 Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal’s first and largest conservation area. The trek will be taking 13 days, starting from Besisahar in the Marshyangdi river valley and endind at Jomsom in the Kali Gandaki river valley. The total length of the route is approx. 160 km, with the highest point being the Thorung La pass at 5.416 m (or 17,769 ft). Aside from multiple high peaks the trail will include everything from paddy fields, subtropical forest, waterfalls, gigantic cliffs to small local villages. The trek will also go through Manang, a Tibetan village with a good atmosphere, where local pastries can be enjoyed while listening to a free course about ‘Mountain Sickness’, conducted by HRA – Himalayan Rescue Association.

 ANNAPURNA BASE CAMP TREK

The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek also known as the Annapurna Sanctuary trek is for the trekkers who are looking for spectacular scenery and a great trekking experience, but only have 11 days available for trekking. ABC lies at a height of 4,230 m and every year is the place from which mountaineers start their summit of Annapurna I, 8,091 m. The ABC trail traverses a variety of terrain ranging from glacier moraine, rice terraces, to rocky stone steps, and along the way offers an amphitheatre of huge Himalayan peaks.

In addition to great scenery the trek takes you through the ethnic communities of Gurung and Thakali, the latter renowned for their Dal Bhat, also known as ‘Thakali’ sets. While this trek can be climbed all year round, except for the monsoon season (Jul-Aug); it is especially beautiful during spring as rhododendron flowers along the trail turn red, pink and white. The ABC is a classic trail and is recommended for anyone looking for a great trekking experience!

 Ghorepani POONHILL TREK

If you want to experience trekking in Nepal, beautiful scenery, and local villages, but do not have more than a week available, or if you do not bother doing a longer trek, then Poonhill is highly recommended.

Poonhill lies at an altitude of 3,210 m and promises spectacular panoramic views of Dhaulagiri, the world’s 7th highest mountain at 8,167 m and Annapurna I the world’s 10th highest mountain at 8,091m, together with many other sky reaching peaks. In Himalayan terms this relatively small hill truly provides awe-inspiring mountain views , making all the physical efforts worthwhile.

En route to the Poonhill trail you’ll be presented with sparkling streams, oak and rhododendron forests, traditional Nepalese villages, and many local teashops. Ghandruk, an antique and cultural village, is another point of interest where the culture and tradition of the Gurung ethnic group can be explored. From here, there will also be a view of the beautiful Machhapuchhre that with its pointed profile makes it a particularly striking peak, despite only having an altitude of 6,903m. All in all, despite Poonhill being the destination the entire Poonhill trek will be an enjoyable and fun trekking experience.

LANGTANG TREK

Langtang is sandwiched in between the Himalayan range to the North and the lower range of mountain peaks to the south. The Langtang trek offers an opportunity to explore villages, hike small peaks, and visit glaciers. Despite Langtang being relatively close to Kathmandu it is considered more remote than e.g. the Annapurna circuit and Everest Base Camp trek. Thus, if you are looking for beautiful nature, local culture, and an excellent hike then Langtang is a good option!

The name Langtang stems from the legend of a budhist lama following a runaway yak into the valley. Lang is Tibetan for Yak and teng means ‘to follow’. Today the valley is still inhabited by yaks. Langtang lies within Langtang National Park, which was considered the first Himalayan national park. Mighty Langtang Lirung dominates the valley with its 7246 m, but the valley itself consists of numerous peaks and promises good scenery. The region is inhabited by the Tamangs whose culture, religious practices, dress and language are influenced by Tibet, bordering the valley.

 MANASLU TREK

Looking for an outstanding trekking experience, but yet with the luxury of tea-houses? Then Manaslu is the trek for you! In the last couple of years tea-houses have been built around the entire Manaslu trek, making this very remote and less touristy trek the place to go now, before its popularity increases too much. The Manaslu trek lies North West of Kathmandu, only a 7 hour bus ride away. The trek will take you around Mt. Manaslu, the world’s 8th highest mountain, at an altitude of 8,163 m.

The Manaslu trek will start from Arughat at 591 m and slowly you will gain altitude day by day until finally passing the Larke Pass at a height of 5,135 m. This is an absolutely amazing trekking route with untouched landscapes. Along the way you will pass through lots of local villages, waterfalls, beautiful pine forests, Buddhist monuments  and monasteries. The entire trek is filled with spectacular views. The trail itself keeps on changing from narrow trails hacked into cliffs, broad walking paths in the middle of pine forests, to dried-out river banks.

EVEREST BASE CAMP - 3 PASSES TREK

This is the ultimate Everest quest. Trekking over three of the highest trekking passes in the region, the EBC - Three Passes Trek offers three weeks of sheer mountain bliss only reserved for the truly adventurous.

The trek follows the lower Khumbu trail towards Everest Base Camp, however the crossing of the three high passes of Kongma La(5,540 m), Cho La (5,335 m) and Renjo La (5,400 m)  is added to give a spectacular and comprehensive circuit of the Everest region. Though strenuous trekking at times, you are rewarded with remarkable Himalayan scenes, including four of the world's eight highest peaks; Cho Oyu (8,201m), Makalu (8,463m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Everest (8,850m), and not to mention Gokyo and its emerald  lakes.

This is all complemented by inviting Sherpa villages, homes and monasteries offering an insight into the quiet and culturally vibrant Sherpa way of life. You have the opportunity to visit ‘off the tourist trail’ tracks if you choose, and you can experience more remote villages and mountainous areas.

GOKYO TREK

Looking for a beautiful trek in the Everest Region with fantastic views of the world‘s highest mountains but want to avoid the crowds? The Gokyo Trek is the one for you.

Situated in the Sulu Khumbu region, the Gokyo trek will provide you with quieter surroundings but still jaw-dropping views of the world’s 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th highest mountains at 8850 m (Everest), 8,516 m (Lhotse), 8,463m (Makalu) and 8,201 m (Cho Oyu,) respectively. You will follow the Dudh Kosi river up the Gokyo valley to meet its source, the enormous Ngozumpa Glacier. You then open out to see the dazzling series of emerald green lakes, surrounded by rough, lofty and beautiful mountain terrain.

The Gokyo trek will take you through traditional Sherpa villages, notably the village of Gokyo, where not only will you experience local Sherpa culture, but also many herds of yaks – the traditional and hard working animals of the Sulu Khumbu region.  The trek finishes with an early morning trek up Gokyo Ri at 5,360m from which you will be rewarded with unforgettable mountain views of the whole Sulu Khumbu region. For those who are seeking that extra challenge, this is an ideal trek. We promise, you will not be disappointed.

 UPPER MUSTANG TREK

Mustang, the former Himalayan kingdom, only opened for trekking in 1991, and is considered to be a last bastion of Tibetan culture. If you are looking for a very cultural trek having stunning treeless barren landscapes with yellow and grey rolling hills eroded by the wind, similar to the Tibetan Plateau, Mustang is a great option!

In common usage Mustang refers to the arid, Tibetan-like region, known to its inhabitants as Lo. Seven hundred years ago Mustang was a bustling place. It was a centre of Buddhist scholarship and art, and very likely the easiest connection between the salt deposits of Tibet and the cities of the Indian subcontinent.

The Mustang trek will take you through Upper Mustang, a restricted area, which previously only allowed some 200 trekkers through annually. While the trail is amazing, its rural and barren landscapes are also not for the feint hearted. The trek itself does not go to extremely high elevations and is not physically very tough, but relentless afternoon winds can be a challenge. Because of the winds and lack of sufficient water, camping will be done in  villages, which are not always conveniently spaced. Some trekking days will thus be relatively long and others relatively short. These are, however, the conditions if you want to experience the starkly beautiful and highly cultural land of Mustang, a trek which is highly recommended.

UPPER DOLPO TREK

Situated North East of Nepal the Dolpo area is vast and covers 15% of Nepal. Hidden away by the lofty Tibetan plateau in the North, Dhaulagiri in the East (the world’s 7th highest mountain at 8,167 m), and mountain passes to the South, this large area is one of Nepal’s hidden gems. The beautiful and remote Dolpo trail traverses a variety of landscapes ranging from fertile rice terraces and eye-catching mountainous terrain to barren landscapes. Highly influenced by Tibetan traditions, the Dolpo trek also introduces Tibetan style villages and Bön monasteries. If looking for both a cultural and beautiful trekking experience, Dolpo is a great option.

While the Dolpo trek is truly beautiful, the mystique and uniqueness of the region was probably further made known by 'The Snow Leopard', the award winning novel written by Perter Matthiesssen in 1979, not to mention 'Himalaya', the 1999 Oscar nominated movie.

Being situated in the Shey Phoksumdo National Park and only being opened up for tourism in 1989, the remote area of Dolpo is a must-visit for any trekkers looking for a cultural trek of a lifetime.

KANCHENJUNGA BASE CAMP

If you are looking for a truly remote and adventurous trekking experience, then Kanchenjunga is the trek for you! With its 8,586 m, Kanchenjunga is the world’s 3rd highest mountain, after K2 and Mount Everest. To the locals Kanchenjunga is not any mountain, but the abode of gods who bestow prosperity and goodwill.

Kanchenjunga is situated in far Eastern Nepal and lies within the 2,035 square kilometres Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. This part of Nepal has never been densely populated and neither has it ever received many trekking tourists. The area is therefore an absolute haven for many rare Himalayan species, including snow leopards, red pandas, and blue sheep. This trek delivers true pristine landscapes.

Via the 5,160 m Lapsang La pass the 4 week trek will take you through both the northern and southern base camp of Kanchenjunga. On the entire trail there will be stunning and remote mountain terrain because in addition to the Kanchenjunga peak, four subsidiary summits exceed 8000m and more than some twenty peaks exceed 7,000 m.

 MAKALU BASE CAMP TREK

If you a looking for adventure, unspoiled Himalayan landscapes, and a hard trek, Makalu Base Camp will be the trek of your life. Situated South West of Mount Everest at the border between Nepal and China, Makalu is the world’s 5th highest mountain at 8,463 m.

With its steep and exposed ridges it is considered to be one of the hardest mountains to climb. Sir Edmund Hillary failed twice and even the mighty climber Reinhold Messner only reached the summiton his 3rd attempt. Now, while this trek will not take you to the Makalu peak, (fortunately…) it will take you to Makalu Base Camp at 5,000 m and the 5,250 m ridge of Shershong from which youwill have awe-inspiring views of Lhotse and Mt. Everest, along with many other peaks.

Most of the trail  goes through the remote and beautiful Makalu-Barun National Park. At the beginning of the trek there will be a few guest houses available. However, as you are approaching Mt Makalu the region will become more and more remote and only camping will be available, at designatedcamp sites.

In the Makalu region the use of firewood is prohibited and the only allowed source of heating is kerosene, which we will stock up on at Tumblingtar the starting point of the trek. Due to there being few villages, it will also be necessary to stock up on food and bring water purifiers.
