Shape the future of ecology: join a British Ecological Society committee

Would you like a say in shaping the future of the BES while making a major contribution to our diverse ecological community? Join one of our committees – a volunteer leadership role with a difference.

Our committees and working groups help deliver our strategic plan, reporting directly to our Board of Trustees. As a committee member you will work closely with BES staff and ecologists to uphold our position as ecology's leading voice.

What’s in it for you?

We provide opportunities to network, directly influence ecological research and help impact and shape how we support our members. We will also help you to develop valuable skills you could not gain anywhere else.

Available Positions

  • Grants Committee – be directly involved in the decision-making process for the grants applications received by the BES
  • Membership Committee – be responsible for developing our offer to our members
  • Equity and Diversity Advisory Group - develop and oversee the delivery of the our equity and inclusion strategy
  • Scottish Policy Group - promote the use of ecological knowledge in all levels of Scottish policy making
  • Policy Committee - guide and oversee the delivery of our policy work (Open for applications soon)

All are welcome

We welcome early career representation and we will make sure that you are provided with information and support to ensure you understand your role. It’s important to us to involve people across all areas of ecology, so we also welcome applications form people who work not just in universities, but charities and environmental NGOS as well.

If you’re interested in learning more about what’s involved, check out these stories from current volunteers who sit on our committees.

Time Commitment

You will need to attend 1-3 meetings annually, each lasting 2-5 hours. You may be asked to read documents shared in advance beforehand.

Reimbursement

While committee positions are voluntary and not paid, we ensure fair reimbursement for travel expenses related to onsite meetings. Additionally, we're committed to supporting your professional development and ensuring your experience with us is rewarding.
