Security: Group calls for more police/media collaboration.
A Non-Governmental Organisation,NGO, KoredeBello Initiative, on Wednesday called for effective collaboration between the Nigeria Police and media practitioners to enhance intelligence gathering for a safer society.
The founder of the initiative, Korede Bello, a Youth Ambassador for the Nigeria Police, made the call at a stakeholders forum organised to foster effective relationship between the media and the Police.
The event, tagged: â Media and the Policeâ was held at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism,NIJ, in Lagos.
Bello, a music star and also a student of NIJ, said there was a need for cordial relations between the media and the police for effective security in Nigeria.
According to him, there is a need to foster a smooth relationship between the police and the media if the efforts of the police on security must yield good results, saying the Police and Media need to work hand in hand to achieve maximum result.
According to him, the two institutions perform significant roles as watchdogs in the society.
He said the two institutions were charged with the responsibility of serving the society by educating and protecting members of the public, as well as preventing crime.
In his contribution at the event, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Fatai Owoseni, reiterated the need for more collaboration between the two institutions.
Owoseni, who was represented by ACP Lanre Ogunlowo, Area Commander, Area G, Ogba, said such partnership was imperative for effective policing in Nigeria.
Also speaking, a security expert, Richard Amuwo, advised the Police to understand how the media works for better communication.
A presenter on Television Continental, Mike Okwoche, said most of the time, the police does not realise how much it needs the media to report its good work.
A radio presenter, Tosin Bucknor, called on the Police to be more friendly and professional in their approach when carrying out their statutory responsibilities.
