Productising Your Expertise For Greater Impact and Increased Revenue

Productising Your Expertise For Greater Impact and Increased Revenue

I want to discuss an essential shift for service providers like you: turning your expertise into products.

This isn't just about making more money, though that's a nice benefit. It's about helping more people and creating a sustainable business that supports you and your clients better.

Let's get into why this is so important and how it can change the way you work.

The Problem with One-to-One Services

Imagine you're charging £100 for a 60-minute session.

You know you're worth at least £300 an hour because of the immense value you provide.

However, you're stuck working one-to-one with clients.

Sure, it feels rewarding, but it's also exhausting. You spend hours outside of these sessions doing research, planning, and brainstorming, which isn't directly paid for.

You work six hours a day, five days a week.

Your weekly income is £3,000, and your monthly income is £12,000. Sounds good, right?

But what happens if you get sick, need a holiday, or simply want a break?

Your income stops. Plus, there's a limit to how many hours you can work before burning out.

Think about it: if your entire business depends on your availability, what happens when you're not there?

The risk is high, and the pressure is immense.

This model isn't sustainable in the long run and can lead to significant burnout and stress.

The Solution: Productising Your Expertise

Now, let's talk about a better way.

By turning your expertise into products, you can create multiple revenue streams and reduce your dependency on working one-to-one.

This is how it works:

Premium One-to-One Sessions

You can still offer these but at a higher rate, say £300 per hour. You'll only need to do a few sessions a month. This makes your time more valuable and exclusive, providing a premium service to those who can afford it and need that personal touch.

Group Coaching

Offer a six-week programme for a group, charging £1,500 per participant. You can help more people at once. This not only increases your reach but also builds a community around your expertise. Group coaching is efficient and can be incredibly rewarding as you see multiple people benefit from your knowledge simultaneously.

Online Courses

Create video courses that people can buy for £300. This allows those with smaller budgets to benefit from your expertise. Online courses are fantastic because they can be sold repeatedly without extra effort on your part. Once created, they generate ongoing revenue and provide value to a broad audience.

Email Courses

An even more affordable option at £50 per enrolment. Email courses are simple to set up and can be a great introduction to your more expensive offerings. They can serve as a funnel to attract new clients who may later invest in your higher-priced services.

Books and Workshops

These are additional ways to share your knowledge and earn money. Writing a book establishes you as an authority in your field, while workshops allow for hands-on interaction and learning. Both can be excellent supplements to your main offerings.

The Financial Impact

Here's an example of how this can work financially:

  • Premium One-to-One Sessions: 10 hours a month at £300 = £3,000
  • Group Coaching: 20 participants at £1,500 each = £30,000
  • Online Courses: 100 enrolments at £300 each = £30,000
  • Email Courses: 100 enrolments at £50 each = £5,000
  • Books and Workshops: £2,000 extra

This gives you a total monthly revenue of £70,000, which is far more than you would earn from one-to-one sessions alone.

Plus, it’s not all dependent on your direct involvement.

You must be able to see how diversifying your offerings not only increases your income but also provides stability and growth potential.

Who Should Do This?

  • If you have expertise that can help others, you should consider productising it.
  • If you’re feeling burnt out from too many one-to-one sessions, this is for you.
  • If you want to help more people but are limited by time, this approach will allow you to reach a larger audience.

Transforming your expertise into products isn't just for established professionals. Even if you're relatively new but confident in your skills, this approach can help you scale your impact and income efficiently.

Who Should Not Do This?

  • If you’re just starting out and still honing your expertise, focus on one-to-one sessions first.
  • If you thrive solely on personal interaction and don’t want to create products, this might not be the best fit for you.

It's important to know your strengths and preferences. If the idea of creating products doesn't excite you or align with your vision, it's okay to stick with what works for you. However, keep in mind the potential benefits and the possibility of blending both models over time.

It's All In Your Mind

The key difference between the one-to-one service model and the productised model is mindset. In the first, your income is tied directly to the hours you work. In the second, you’re building systems and products that generate ongoing revenue.

This isn't just about increasing income. It's about creating a business that can continue to grow, help more people, and provide you with the flexibility and freedom you deserve.

Think about this: instead of trading time for money, you're building assets that work for you. This shift in thinking is crucial for long-term success and sustainability.

It allows you to focus on higher-level tasks, innovate, and reach more people without exhausting yourself.

How to Get Started Productising Your Expertise

Identify Your Core Expertise

Start by clearly defining what you do best. What knowledge or skills do you have that others need? Your core expertise will be the foundation of your products.

Choose the Right Products

Decide which products make the most sense for you and your audience. You don't have to do everything at once. Start with one or two and expand as you go.

Create Quality Content

Your products should be top-notch. Invest time in creating high-quality courses, books, or coaching programmes. Your reputation depends on the value you provide.

Market Your Offerings

Effective marketing is key. Use social media, email lists, and other channels to reach your audience. Highlight the benefits and transformations your products offer.

Gather Feedback and Improve

Always seek feedback and use it to improve. This will help you refine your offerings and better meet the needs of your clients.
