The Only Sales Tip You'll Ever Need
When working in sales you have plenty of challenges. Whether it's knowing enough about your product, following a sales process, overcoming objections all to try and get a single sale. On top of that you have to do it over and over again, each and every day! It's a very challenging role.
There is a long list of sales tips out there, including:
- Research your client
- Have a well rehearsed opening pitch
- Follow a good sales process
- Remember key details about your customers
- ABC - Always Be Closing
- Be a follow up specialist
- Make your customer feel important
- Always prospect
- Strive for recommendations and referrals
- Play the numbers game
- Call at the right time
- Use social media
- Know your product inside and out
- Research your industry
These are all great bits of advice, but really they just fall into the requirements of the job. All sales people should be doing these activities as they are key to succeeding in sales. So whilst some people will name them tips and tricks, actually they are just part of your normal day to day job, they are essential to sales success.
This leaves just one tip that every sales person should need, just one simple tip that can be applied to all areas of sales and will significantly improve both your sales results and how much you enjoy your job.
That tip quite simply is.....
That is the only sales tip you will ever need to know! "Do what you love, love what you do". It can be applied to any part of sales, to any bit of advice, to any bit of training, to any part of the sales process. If you genuinely love what you are doing, you will do significantly better at it.
I know when you say "love" it all sounds a bit cheesy and hard to take seriously. But if you can sell with passion, with belief, with genuine love, people will buy into that.
Keep reading and I'll explain!
Think about your favorite sport, your favorite film or your favorite band. Now think about when you talk to your friends and family about them. How excited do you get, how passionate do you sound. You will try and convince them to support that team, to watch that sport, listen to that amazing song or go and see that film. You will be so convincing, you will speak with such belief and you will be relatable as you have been a customer as well.
So imagine if you felt the same about the product you have to sell? Imagine if you felt the same about what you had to do to get a sale?
For example, let's imagine you are making cold calls. Like most people, you will probably hate cold calls. Now because you hate it, no matter how hard you pretend, you will sound like you hate it! Or you will sound like a machine, just doing a job. If however you were to love sales calling, every call would sound a lot different, and you would be more likely to get a better result. I spoke to someone on the phone today and the energy they had, they sounded so positive and happy, it was a much better call than when you speak to someone who has already lost interest before the conversation has even started.
The same can be said for door knocking, face to face meetings, networking. It can be said for asking for the close, for presenting your product or a solution. If you love doing it you will do a much better job!
I know some people might struggle to love selling or struggle to love the product they are selling. That's fine, but it doesn't take away the fact that if you did love what you did, and you loved what you sold, you would be better at it, more successful and enjoy it more. So have a think about what you need to do to fall in love with your job and your product. Here are some tips:
- Take your product on a few dates, give it a try.
- Create a routine at work that works for you.
- Find ways to spice your daily routine up.
- Start each day off positively
- Write down what you love about your job
- Write down what you love about your product
Again, I know it's not as serious or hard hitting as other sales posts or tips, but actually at the heart of any sales process or tip is passion. So if you love anything you do, it will reap much better results, both for you and your customers.
Happy Selling :)
