October – What's Next in Illustration ☕️✨

October – What's Next in Illustration ☕️✨

Earlier this month we were thrilled to host our first in-person Creative Cuppa event at Somerset House – we heard from three brilliant artists from the Grand Matter roster, who delved into particular aspects of their practices while we offered up our insights into the recent shifts and trends we've seen in the illustration industry. Thank you if you were able to make it down, a great morning!

We're also sharing an exciting new collaborative animation project for Fintech brand Wero from Thomas Hedger & Plastic Horse, Owen Gildersleeve 's animated editorial for POLITICO , John Booth's fabulous sculptural for Rosewood Hotel Group , Kezia Gabriella & Plastic Horse 's animation for The Association of Illustrators , Rosie Barker 's latest collaboration with Morning Brew and Aiste Stancikaite's current solo show at GNYP Gallery in Berlin. PLUS! Hollie Fuller 's top picks to visit, watch and listen to.

Thomas Hedger X Wero

Earlier this year Thomas was brought on board by EPI (European Payments Initiative) to create an extensive suite of bold and energetic illustrations, animated by our in-house motion team Plastic Horse , which would form a key part of the brand identity for their new digital wallet and instant account-to-account payments solution – Wero.

Owen Gildersleeve X POLITICO

The team at POLITICO commissioned Owen to create a series of paper artworks for an editorial feature titled 'Revealed: Putin’s sanctions-busting shadow fleet spilling oil all over the world'. Owen's three part illustration series was inspired by vintage Russian propaganda posters, taking cues on the graphic use of form and limited colour palettes. The captivating piece shown here was then beautifully brought to life by our in-house Grand Motion animators, Plastic Horse.

John Booth X Rosewood London

After collaborating with the hotel earlier this year to design a special edition afternoon tea inspired by his work, John has collaborated with Rosewood once again; but this time on a large-scale immersive sculptural piece designed to bring a moment of colour and intrigue to the main courtyard of the hotel throughout October.

Kezia Gabriella X The AOI

As part of the launch of their new website, the Association of Illustrators (AOI) asked Kezia to create a fun, dynamic, characterful and informative animation; collaborating with our in-house animators at Grand Motion. The aim was to highlight the non-profit organisations offering and what they do to champion illustrators and the industry through education, promotion and campaigning.

Rosie Barker X Morning Brew

Commissioned by Morning Brew, Rosie was asked to create a set of illustrations for an article titled The Game of HR, which focuses on HR professionals navigating challenges on their journey to the C-suite. Visually they wanted to achieve a feeling of a board game concept which aligned perfectly with Rosie’s final illustrations that included complex paths, ladders, counters and dice.

Aiste Stancikaite: 'CROSSINGS'

Artist and illustrator Aiste Stancikaite’s latest solo exhibition opened last week at GNYP Gallery in Berlin. This marks Aiste’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, and features a series of painting depicting androgynous and anonymous beings, gloved hands, mouths and tongues, intricate fabric folds, floating and layered on backlit picture planes.

'CROSSINGS' is open now and runs until 23rd November 2024 at GNYP Gallery, Berlin.

Artist Picks - Hollie Fuller

For the October edition of Artist Picks, we caught up with Lincolnshire-based illustrator (and founder of the Big Brave Girl's club) Hollie Fuller on some things she's been enjoying recently.

VISITED: Fundació Joan Miró "A real joy nestled in Parc de Montjuïc, Barcelona. A huge handful of colourful, playful paintings and fun sculptures that are such a treat if you, like me, love inanimate objects with faces. All housed within an iconic stark white geometric building surrounded by blue skies, green trees and the best views of Barcelona.

WATCHING: Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing "The most wholesome, life-affirming programme that makes me laugh and cry and feel fuzzy feelings every single episode. It's kind of about fishing but more so about the importance of friendship, slowing down and connecting with nature (and Bob Mortimer falling over)."

LISTENING TO: The Fringe of It "The perfect accompaniment to a lonely freelance day, The Fringe of It is a podcast that is exactly like sitting down with a couple of friends and having a natter about all things food, fashion, nostalgia, telly and beyond."
