Marie Management: Nonprofit Marketing and Adverstising Development

Nonprofit Marketing and Advertising Development

Introduction

Marie Management is your business consulting firm that specializes in hybrid models nationally and internationally. Our system requires our consultants to address the structure, development, operations and execution of each business function and or department. With this method, we ensure that all businesses have the proper systems and strategies in place to maximize impact and revenue.

Description

Traditionally you will hear organizations and firms direct nonprofit organizations to for-profit methods of marketing prior to engaging them in the community first. I've never quite understood this, but I learned that it's primarily because everybody's in business for themselves. However, we encourage nonprofit organizations to start marketing efforts from within. Engaging volunteers, staff, board members, managers and executives in the thorough communication of the organization.

Structure

When structuring marketing and advertising efforts, and organization must first understand that messaging within the organization must be aligned first. Everything from branding, documentation distribution, answering the phone, returning fax, voice mails, email signatures, etc must be congruent. We find that most organizations, no matter the size, skip over all other means of properly structuring a nonprofit and jump right into marketing and advertising. Structure outreach programs and initiatives, develop community engagement practices and develop a means for your existing stakeholders to inform someone else of the services you provide. Do these things long before a marketing and advertising budget can be spent on the items within the development section of this article.

Development

After you have structured how the organization will practice daily marketing and advertising techniques, then you are ready to develop a solid plan for high level strategy. Nonprofits must contribute a portion of all proceeds earned to the marketing and advertising budget that will provide exposure in the areas of:

Marketing: the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.

  • Product, Program, Service Packaging
  • Product, Program, Service Placement
  • Collateral Materials, Printing and Distribution

Advertising: the activity or profession of producing advertisements for commercial products or services. Examples:

  • Television Ads
  • Radio Ads
  • Internet Ads
  • Social Media Ads

Public Relations: the professional maintenance of a favorable public image by a company or other organization or a famous person.

  • Press Releases and Activities
  • Promotion Events
  • Publicity Events
  • Internal and External Messaging

Operations

What you'll find most times is nonprofit organizations are only doing one of these very well, if at all. And that is typically because a for-profit firm has been hired without expertise in the nonprofit space, rang up an extreme bill and did not deliver an appropriate marketing mix of all the necessary activities needed. However, when its time to organize the operations behind the properly delivered, structured and development marketing and advertising plan, the organization has to outline how these activities will be practiced on a daily basis.

The organization will have to outline a daily, monthly, quarterly and annual practice of how each activity will be measured on effectiveness. Some marketing, advertising and public relations activities work for some nonprofits and do not for others. This is why you'll hear our friends in that space say, "It's all about testing." Be sure to ask for a case study of marketing, advertising and public relations practices that have worked for your type of nonprofit organization before you hire them. Otherwise you will have another document that takes up dust in your office and blows the budget for nothing more than a copy-paste research study.

Execution

When you are pleased with the marketing, advertising and public relations mix you have received, it's time to execute, measure and deliver the recommendations on a daily basis. Remember that the average monthly budget for these activities is $5,000-$10,000. Be sure to plan for a portion of all of your revenue to contribute to it on a regular basis.

Do not accept a marketing, advertising and public relations plan that is beyond your current or expected budget. If you have not determined this type of a budget, request an outline and begin building relationships with individuals that support your cause enough to provide the services. My ultimate favorite execution method in this area is to locate firms that specialize in our type of business, the normally work within our budgets and understand our limitations.
