My Journey with Agile Teams: Turning Leadership and Teamwork on Its Head

My Journey with Agile Teams: Turning Leadership and Teamwork on Its Head

A Toast to a New Chapter in Leadership and Teamwork

Let me take you through a chapter from my life that I hold close to my heart. It was during my time on a recent project that I found myself in the middle of an incredible transformation within several software development teams.

Working Hand in Hand: What really made a difference in this project was the tight-knit collaboration with the team's Director and Managers. It was this partnership that helped us nudge the teams into a more unified and efficient way of working.

Our Goals Were Clear:

  1. Building a Stronger Team Bond: I guided the teams in adopting Agile methodologies to enhance their collaboration.
  2. Forging Deeper Connections with Stakeholders: We worked on bridging the gap between the developers, Product Owners, and other stakeholders.
  3. Refining our Agile Skills: From Sprints to estimates, we focused on honing our Agile practices.
  4. Clarifying Acceptance Criteria: We made it a point to stress the importance of having clear acceptance criteria.
  5. Gleaning More from Retrospectives: Using retrospectives as a tool for real growth was a game changer.
  6. Advocating for Servant Leadership: A big part of our mission was to introduce and instill the principles of Servant Leadership. This didn’t just change how we worked; it changed how we thought, creating a supportive and empowering atmosphere.

My Personal Growth: Working alongside the Director, I dove headfirst into this role, learning as much as I was teaching. It was a real journey of mutual growth, benefiting not just the teams and the Director, but also myself in many unexpected ways.

The Time We Spent: What was initially a three-month contract blossomed into a four-month adventure, as we welcomed a new team into the fold, ensuring they were up to speed with our improved practices.

The Lasting Impact: Looking back, this project wasn’t just about hitting targets. It was about the change we brought in the way we lead and collaborate. It stands as one of my most fulfilling professional experiences.

A big shout out and thanks to everyone, especially the Director and Managers, for their open-mindedness and dedication to fostering an environment where leadership means support and collaboration is key.
