Midwives deliver hope for women in Yemen and Chad | Urgent measures needed in Gaza and Haiti | More

This week, in honor of the International Day of the Midwife , a brave midwife shares her personal story in a powerful video, describing how she risked her life to help a woman give birth. The head of midwifery at a health centre in Yemen, a country with one of the highest maternal death rates in the world, describes how midwives are a crucial gateway to health services , especially in times of crisis. In Chad, where tens of thousands of Cameroonian refugees fled after violence reignited over the use of resources, particularly water, midwives are helping to prevent maternal deaths . In Haiti, violence has reached terrifying levels, and UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem calls for urgent protection measures that "integrate the rights and needs of women, girls and all civilians." In Gaza, nearly seven months of war have inflicted unthinkable suffering, and Dr. Kanem stresses the need for all hospitals, health-care workers and patients to be protected. "Civilians must never be a target, and their needs must be met," she says. "We call for an immediate ceasefire, and for the unconditional release of all hostages in Gaza." Thanks for reading.
