Israel and Palestine

Aid to Israel. Rep. Michael McCaul, the Republican chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told ABC News about a bipartisan resolution and a possible supplemental aid package to Israel.

“We have over 400 co-sponsors, which is almost unheard of. But it shows our unity behind Israel and our condemnation of Hamas and this terror attack that occurred last Saturday,” McCaul said.

However, the resolution and aid are in limbo until a new Speaker of the House is chosen and legislative activities resume.

The Senate voted unanimously on October 19, 97-0, for a resolution stating that the Senate stands firmly with Israel and firmly against Hamas. According to The Hill, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Majority Leader, said that the resolution shows the Senate speaks “in one voice that Israel is our friend, that Hamas’s attack is reprehensible, and that we will stand with our friends to defend themselves.”

President Biden is expected to ask Congress for $10 billion for military and humanitarian aid for Israel that would be part of a $100 billion foreign aid and national security emergency spending bill.

Aid to Palestine. President Biden announced on October 18 that the US is providing $100 million in humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank to support a million displaced and conflict-affected people with water, food, hygiene support, medical care, and other essential needs. The US provides humanitarian assistance through trusted partners including UN agencies and international NGOs.

The White House stated, “The civilians are not to blame and should not suffer for Hamas’s horrific terrorism. Civilian lives must be protected, and assistance must urgently reach those in need.”
