Influential Graphic Designers That Inspire Me

Influential Graphic Designers That Inspire Me

Last week I dove into the top four designers- here is another set of graphic designers who push the envelope forward and inspire me to be better every day! As you dive in and consider their body of work I would recommend taking a few minutes and reflecting on how you can be a little bit better today than you were yesterday. These designers (however talented) did not get there overnight, it took discipline and time. Don’t be discouraged; instead, be inspired and try to beat them!

Paul Rand

Inspiring and an industry legend.

Born in 1914, Paul Rand was an exceptional graphic designer who worked with brands including IBM, UPS, and ABC. His approach to the unconventional set him apart and eventually, he became inducted into the Art Directors Hall Of Fame. He ended up teaching at Yale and has inspired thousands of designers across the globe. His most inspiring aspect was his start as a designer- painting grocery store advertisement signs for his father. I find it remarkable that such a simple beginning could lead to such a brilliant career.

Louise Fili

Brilliant and timeless.

Louise Fili is one of the most remarkable graphic designers I have ever heard of. I am extremely humbled by her creativity and talent. She specializes in typography design and has worked with major publications to create incredible work. Her work is featured in museums and the Library of Congress (which is incredible). She taught and the School of Visual Arts and also was inducted into the Art Directors Hall of Fame. Her style and creativity are remarkable and her most inspiring work was the illuminated manuscripts of Bob Dylan’s lyrics- a truly remarkable composition. Check out more of her work here.

Jessica Walsh

Incredible & provocative.

Jessica Walsh is incredible, I could probably stop right there. She was born in 1986 and ended up going to university at RISD, after which she interned at the prestigious Pentagram design firm located in NYC. She worked under Paula Scher and ended upp taking a job with Print magazine after that. She has worked with brands such as The New York TImes and Plenty. Her designs are stunning and provocative. Check out her studio here.

Paula Scher

One of the best.

She is an incredible designer and has shaped our industry. She has worked with brands including Random House, Atlantic, and Coca-Cola. She is a marvel. The area that interests me the most about Miss Scher is her love and revival of historical typefaces in areas such as Art Deco and Russian constructivism. She leads the charge and has inspired me a million times over.

If you have not watched her profile on the Netflix docu-series Abstract: The Art of Design head over and do that. It is remarkable the work that she has done in the design industry and the educational space as well. She taught at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York starting in 1992. She loves public theater and art.

The End

I hope that helps inspire you to be a little bit better today than you were yesterday. If you want to follow the hustle head over to my site for free premium assets every month and best practices. The common thread that I see with all of these individuals is that they all stayed consistent. They put themselves in the right situation and made great designs. They stuck with it for over 20 years and made things that were remarkable. We should all build off of their ideas, concepts, and designs to keep moving things forward in the area of design.

Stay humble, and hustle harder.
