Individuality Is Normal!
"I do know what normal is, but it's not me." - Anon... The word 'normal' is used in everyday life, and we use it quite often. So what does normal mean? The definition of 'normal' is "conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected.", as per the dictionary and online sources. So anything that aligns with a standard is normal. For example, the normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything above or below is not normal. In the regular course of life, when used in statements that represent fact or a fundamental truth like the norms of a democracy allowing all individuals equal rights, 'normal' holds a unique place, allowing justice to prevail and ensuring inequality can be rooted out. Over the years, the meaning of the word 'Normal', when referring to characteristics or traits of an individual, be it physical or intellectual, changed drastically. At one point, the norm defined what was acceptable to such an extent that instead of embracing their individuality, people tried to mould themselves to fit into what was 'acceptable' in the society, among peers and essentially the 'norm'.Â
The need to follow the 'norm' and 'fit in' left many individuals emotionally drained, unmotivated and questioning their self-worth. It also led to anxiety, fear of judgment etc., leading to a curb in their creativity, expression and finally, freedom. This observation begs the question, "Is it possible that something that is okay for me may not be okay for someone else?". If we do come across such a situation in life, what is the correct response? According to me, the use of the word 'average' or 'normal' as a descriptor for an individual's characteristics and abilities showcases the limit of one's knowledge and understanding of the world around them. It also displays a disregard for the individuality of a person by stripping the very essence of that which makes a person an individual to arbitrary standards or personal preference rather than a fact or reason.

It is crucial to understand that standards are a guide to establishing a common ground for a set of people but are not the only possibility. So, yes, it is conceivable that something which feels normal to us may be extraordinary for others and vice-a-versa. It is also vital to remember that as individuals, we may have different opinions and approaches to life or aspects of it. But just because it does not fit into something we are familiar with or is not common, it does not deserve the same respect and should be persecuted.
Each one of us can respect another individual's views even if we don't agree with them. It is unnecessary to try and change someone's opinion or approach just because it does not align with ours. We should you such an opportunity of opposing views to understand the subject or individual better and seek to add value to ourselves. Bottom line, you can always choose to agree to disagree instead of making someone feel guilty or lesser just because they don't share your views. Remember, there are always exceptions to the norm, and they should be acknowledged and accepted to ensure positive inclusivity.
