How to Stay Alert at Work

How to Stay Alert at Work

Governments around the world are signalling that a progressive return to work is now acceptable. Whilst a broad framework has been provided, as always, it will be down to the leaders of business to determine what that means in practice.

As a leader - what do you already have in place that can support you?

  • A widely understood risk assessment process.
  • Access to competent H&S support.
  • A mechanism for checking that your risk controls are working.
  • A culture where raising concerns is positively received and responded to.

As a leader – who do you need to consult and communicate with?

  • Speaking regularly with your direct team will be essential to create, launch and monitor your updated work practices.
  • Your workforce, as always will provide valuable insights as to how work activities can be conducted safely – make sure you ask them.
  • Use your trusted H&S advisor to guide and support and monitor that new work practices are being conducted safely.
  • Communicate frequently and clearly as to what is required and what has been achieved.
  • Share good news as a basis for building confidence that work can be conducted safely.

What should be the core of your response?

  • Risk management at a company level to look at everything that must be considered in one place, to support prioritisation and allocation of resources.
  • Risk assessment at the practical level to determine who can be at work, how to maintain social distancing and how to achieve good personal hygiene.
  • Risk Assessment of psychological risks of a return to work.
