How to be an instant success in business - oh really!

What is the path FORWARD, and ADVICE, that I can give?

This is my story of the past 50 years - take from it what you will.

To be able to give advice about planning the future, it is necessary to look backwards.

All of my past Failures and Successes- each one of these provided strength, some pain and many lessons. Not only of Business but of Life itself. The failures (and there were many) became stepping stones to success. You will have your own failures and so there is no benefit in cataloguing mine. Suffice it to say that the benefit of failures is the energy generated can find solutions.

As a basic, it is all about choices. Choices you made and their results and the choices you didn't make. Take the time to examine these choices and use the energy it provide.

Although it is somewhat simplistic, Failures, when recognised and handled, are most likely to give greater rewards than any past Successes.

OK. Let us cut to the chase.

Firstly, I found it important to gain some form of Study verification - the effort required to complete, studying at night whilst working during the day, although difficult produced its own rewards. At that time, I had just married and had no funds whatsoever.

The substance, of the course of study, was not really too important, in the long term, provided it required you to focus on achieving goals. In my case it required me to study and achieve an Accountancy Qualification.

After qualifying and working as an Accountant on a salary, I was convinced (by a very persuasive salesman) to take up a Commission Sales Career. This taught humility and perseverance. In my case, employment with Burroughs Inc as a Salesman required me to be a Qualified Accountant.

This step was a major turning point for me as I had to earn my way every month, instead of relying on being paid a salary. No commission meant no income, and a family to support.

With the right training provided by Burroughs, the major skills learned were, Communication, Sales skills and acceptance that success was all about your own focus, making continual correct choices, unprotected by the security of a Wage. The supposed security of a Wage is a myth, as is often demonstrated by the many layoffs when business is difficult. In contrast, having a Sales skill is very marketable. Always, be prepared to be actively listening, and learn, as compared to Listening to Reply.

The final stage was to determine how I could identify a profitable business proposition by either meeting a Business Need and/or Solving a Business Problem in a newer, more profitable, more innovative way. The need could be either Goods or Services. This meant my future was then totally dependent on my ability to manage not only the business but employees as well.

The recognition is that all success takes time. Another false premise is of Instant Success - in my case it took 5 years for my super-successful business, Comacc The Payroll People, to become an instant success. A story that my father had told stood me in good stead. In the days of Goldmining, it wasn't the Miner who made the Fortune but the Business that sold the shovels. What that meant was to have a business where you can design something that can be sold and supported by partners. The principle of selling One to Many rather than One to One.

During my 50-year business career, I have succeeded (and failed occasionally) in numerous endeavours including Business Consultant, Cost Accountant, Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary, General Manager, Copy Centre, Instant Photo Laboratory, Employment Agent, Insurance Agent, Building Society Representative, Publisher, Licensed Restaurant, ITP Taxation Franchise, Wholesale Butcher, Retail Butcher, Lingerie Manufacturer, Life Insurance Salesman, Computer Salesman, Motel, Cafe, Commercial Property, Finance Company, Real Estate Company and Payroll Software.

What does show, (other than my strange habit of collecting businesses) a necessary ingredient of success is perseverance and never giving up. It is unlikely that I will ever retire as the business of business is just too much fun.
