Ross, the police commissioner, described the attack as an execution attempt.
âI just have to tell you, when you look at the videoâwe have video that captured all of thisâitâs one of the scariest things Iâve ever seen. This guy tried to execute the police officer. Itâs amazing heâs alive,â Ross said at a press conference Friday morning.
Hartnett managed to return fire at the gunman during the attack and he is currently in police custody.
CBS Philly, citing sources, reported that the suspect confessed to the shooting and said that he did it in the name of Islam.
Three bullets hit Hartnett in the arm during the shooting. The officer suffered significant arm injuries that required surgery but was awake before the operation.
The FBI is currently assisting the investigation.

8yThe gunman is practically in the car, shooting at Philly's cop, hile screeming Allahu Akbir (God is Great), then at police station confession he is an ISIS supporter. A lone wolf, sleeper agent, and it simply new recruit trying to show his allegiance to ISIS. These are not signs of things to come, bug a new wave of violence directed both to soft targets and hard targets. By repeated attacks to out brand thin blue line they are hinting if these cops are not safe, what about people. This is when we need new TTPs to combat this wave of violence which in fact is steadily growing. I think cops should be min doubled of two vehicles always watching each other's 180 degrees. We need something more than this protective posture. And for the people you will be better served packing concealed than having nothing. And don't be see alone walking while leaving your six uncovered. You must be vigile and ready to snap to your military training. As for those w no weapons, or military training I leave if up to them an their city/town officials to protect them. We also need more cameras and surveillance.
