The Future of Fundraising

The ‘leaky bucket’ metaphor has become commonplace within the fundraising sector to describe donor attrition. It’s a symptom, when unresolved - especially within mid-level giving - that typically grows and wreaks havoc on the major gift pipeline for years to come. The best medicine for a leaky bucket is actually a proactive preventive measure – multi-year giving.

When mid-level donors commit to multi-year gifts, not only is that the closest guarantee that fundraisers can earn before gift fulfillment, but it also deepens relationships in incredible ways – relationships that can quickly move from a series of solicitation touchpoints and grow into understanding motivations that can up-level donors faster than you may think.

In a Givzey webinar last week, Beth Hunsinger and Shelby Orlando from University of Mary Washington shared that this attention to securing multi-year gifts from mid-level donors is a key strategy for the University. Here are Beth’s words:

"We realized that we really had no place in the middle for folks who they gave at the $2,500 leadership level for annual giving. And then our major gift threshold is $25,000. And that's a big leap. So we really wanted to focus on those mid-level donors as part of our multi-year pledge strategy in order to develop the major gift donors of the future."

The results Mary Washington has achieved in just five months of work in this area are amazing. Using Givzey’s Intelligent Gift Documentation Management solution, the team has been able to scale multi-year giving commitments by 10x.

I invite you to view the on-demand webinar to see both how they achieved this milestone and how they’re moving into the new fiscal year with an expanded approach.
