Five College Students Were Shot at Morgan State University in Baltimore
RISKAlert #1784 October 3, 2023 Baltimore, Maryland
A multi-victim shooting involving the wounding of five individuals took place yesterday at Baltimoreâs Morgan State University on Tuesday, wounding five people and prompting an hours long lockdown of the historically Black college during their Homecoming celebration. Students were on lockdown for several hour, as police went room to room looking for suspects. No arrests were made.
Police Commissioner Richard Worley said the five victims, four men and one woman, are between the ages of 18 and 22. Their injuries were not life-threatening, he told reporters at a news conference early Wednesday. Morgan State Police Chief Lance Hatcher said four of the victims are students at the university. The police did not release information about a suspect or suspects, and Worley said that investigators didnât know how many shooters were involved.
The shooting happened shortly after the coronation of Mister & Miss Morgan State at the Murphy Fine Arts Center, as students were heading to a campus ball. A police news release said officers responded to a report of the shooting around 9:25 p.m. Konnor Crowder, a sophomore from Baltimore, said he and his friends had been waiting for the coronation ball to start when they saw people running. âFirst I was wondering what they were running for, then I was wondering where we should go,â he said.
California will double the taxes on guns and ammunition and use the money to pay for more security at public schools and various violence prevention programs under a new law Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Tuesday. Â

The federal government already taxes the sale of guns and ammunition at either 10% or 11%, depending on the type of gun. The law Newsom signed adds another 11% tax on top of that â making it the only state with its own tax on guns and ammunition, according to the gun control advocacy group Brady.
