Find the Time & Will to Change

Find the Time & Will to Change

Finding time and willpower are the top two barriers to making change that lasts, especially change that deals with your health. I have felt the struggle and hear it daily from those I serve.

The crazy part is how simple it is to find time and will to change if 3 small things are done. Before I share them with you let me warn you.... although these tips are SIMPLE they require you to CHANGE YOUR MIND. This is not easy, but the good news is it is completely DOABLE! I am rooting for your success!

3 Tips for finding the TIME & WILL to Change

  1. CHANGE YOUR MIND- STOP thinking about change as one big change; instead think of change as 100 or more itty bitty changes that lead to one big change. It may sound simple, but this mindset change is critical. Thinking of change occurring in hundreds of small changes guides you to make small changes one at a time. It also encourages you to keep trying even when you have setbacks. It is normal and expected to have challenges, wins, and some losses. When you believe it takes hundreds of changes, you will keep trying without overthinking the mistakes or off days. Ex. Changing by being active one minute at a time and slowly adding more until 6 months later you find yourself being active 30-60 min per day for life.
  2. Shorten the TIME. Make the time commitment so small that there is no reason you can't do it. I am not sure why we are so stubborn. I am stubborn about making the time smaller, and I notice most people are the same. We need to have a win it's empowering and gives us the confidence to keep going. SO make the time commitment SMALL! My favorite example is a nurse I worked with who wanted to reduce her stress but did not have time, so she set the goal of taking a deep breath before seeing each patient. It was such a small time commitment it ensured her continuous success. Taking one breath between patients slowly group to include a meditation practice in the morning and evening, but it all started with one breath that took less than 10 seconds!
  3. STOP SHOULDING. It is difficult to make time and have the will to change when you do not want to make the change but are doing it because you think you should. It is better to ask yourself, "What is one small change I can make that will benefit my overall well-being?" Trust yourself. Once you stop fighting yourself and listen to the changes you want to make, it leads to lasting changes. One doctor I worked with was convinced she should go to the yoga studio and take their 90 min classes. Her reality is that she didn't want to go and was just too busy. Instead, she opted to do one yoga pose daily and incorporate walking meetings with staff. It was so clever and was something she wanted to do instead of a "SHOULD"

I hope you are inspired to try these simple tips. I am rooting for you to be curious and change your mind about CHANGE. - Karla
