Empowering Visually Impaired Students: Digital Literacy Initiative in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide for visually impaired students, the National Association For the Blind (NAB) Himachal Pradesh, in collaboration with Benetech Bookshare and mjunction services ltd , recently organized a comprehensive training program on digital literacy. Held at the serene Himalayan Kothi, Manjdhari, Jana, Kullu, hosted generously by Shalini Vats Kimta , the event marked a significant milestone in the larger nationwide mission called "Project Jyoti," dedicated to enhancing digital literacy among students with disabilities across India.

"The introduction to digital literacy training program is a transformative step towards empowering visually impaired students and providing them with the necessary tools to thrive in the digital age," remarked Mr. Rakesh Kanwar, Education Secretary of Himachal Pradesh Government, highlighting the significance of the initiative.

The inaugural event saw visually impaired students from Himachal Pradesh being ushered into the digital age through an intensive four-day training program. Led by esteemed disability trainers from Benetech , Dr. Homiyar Mobedji and Miss Zainab Chinikamwala , the training aimed at empowering students with essential digital skills and assistive technologies. Despite their own disabilities, Dr. Homiyar and Miss Zainab brought decades of experience to the event, exemplifying unwavering dedication to driving social change across various regions.

"Digital literacy is not just about accessing information; it's about empowering individuals to navigate the digital world with confidence and independence," emphasized Dr. Homiyar Mobedji, In-charge for Benetech for Asia and Africa.

Throughout the training, participants from NAB Himachal Pradesh actively engaged in learning digital literacy skills, gaining access to digital tools, and familiarizing themselves with assistive technologies. Moreover, they received guidance on accessing e-books and e-libraries, paving the way for a transformative learning experience.

A pivotal aspect of the program was the distribution of 28 mobile phones, along with earphones and keyboards, among the students of NAB Himachal Pradesh. These devices serve as catalysts for their journey towards digital literacy, enabling them to harness the power of technology for learning and communication.

"The provision of mobile phones and assistive technologies opens up a world of opportunities for visually impaired students, empowering them to pursue their academic and personal goals with newfound independence," remarked Mrs. Lalita Kanwar, Founder & Managing Director of LMS Chain of Schools.

The overarching objective of the initiative is to unlock new opportunities for visually impaired students, revolutionizing their learning experience and fostering independence. By acquiring digital reading and writing skills, participants are equipped with the tools needed to navigate the digital landscape with confidence and autonomy.

"The training program not only imparts essential digital skills but also instills a sense of empowerment and self-reliance among visually impaired individuals, fostering a more inclusive society," noted Ms. Torul S. Raveesh, DC Kullu.

The event garnered attention from notable personalities and distinguished guests, including Mrs. Savita, Academic Coordinator of LMS Chain of Schools, and Indian alpine skier, Anchal Thakur. Additionally, Deputy Directors of Elementary and Higher Education, Kullu, along with the principal of DIET Kullu and educators from GSSS Sultanpur and GSSS Bhunter, joined members of the NAB Himachal Pradesh family in celebrating this commendable endeavor.
