Dante's 21st Century Inferno & 5 New Circles of Hell

In Fair Verona, Where We Lay Our Scene...

I recently had a chance to visit Verona, the gorgeous home of Romeo and Juliette. I learned that for a number of years, Verona was also home to Dante Alighieri, the legendary author of the the Inferno and its nine circles of hell. Sitting across his statue in this ancient square, we thought it would be a good idea to get Dante to pass judgement on the 21st century. Channeled through some cutting-edge technology, here's what he had to say...

Dante's 21st Century Inferno

"Ah, so you ask for my judgement, such as I may give. Very well.

Behold, the 21st century, an era seething with transgressions new and old. A new circle, I decree, must be carved into the Inferno for the sin of Indifference, as I observe too many souls too concerned with themselves to see the suffering around them. In this circle, I place those who ignore the poor, the sick, the oppressed, as if turning a blind eye absolves responsibility.

The Second Circle, dedicated to the sin of Falsehood, is for those who use the power of their words for deceit rather than truth. The misinformation spread by those in power, those in media, those behind the anonymity of the Internet, it is a plague of dishonesty that undermines the very fabric of society.

In the Third Circle, I condemn the sin of Consumption. Here lie those who exploit the Earth's resources with reckless abandon, heedless of the consequences, and those who participate in the relentless consumerism without thought for the cost to the environment or to their fellow humans.

Next, a Fourth Circle for the sin of Disunity. Here are those who sow discord and hatred, who fan the flames of division rather than strive for unity and peace. They use the differences among humans as a weapon rather than a strength.

Finally, a Fifth Circle for the sin of Apathy. Here rest those who have the power to effect change, yet do nothing. The world leaders who ignore crises, the wealthy who do not use their wealth to better the world, the influencers who care more for their image than for the issues they could help address.

Thus, the 21st century stands judged, each circle a testament to the ways humanity could, and should, do better. Yet let us not forget Purgatorio and Paradiso, for there is always hope for redemption and for the celebration of virtue. Now, as ever, it lies in the hands of humans to choose their path."

Upping the Ante with Dante

As you reflect on the words of Dante channeled across the centuries through our newest technologies, what resonates most with you, and what do you think could be an additional circle that could be added to his list? I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
