Coaching presence: What's curiosity got to do with it?

“Oh-oh-oh, what's curiosity got to do, got to do with it? What's curiosity, but a second-hand interrogation? What's curiosity got to do, got to do with it? Who needs a coach when a question is there for the taking?”(With apologies to Tina Turner)

This month’s theme in The Tuesday Club, a coaching community I recently started, is Managing Presence and it got me thinking about what curiosity has to do with presence. I mean, overall curiosity is a fundamental aspect of coaching that promotes exploration, self-reflection, learning, and personal growth. By embracing curiosity, we can help our clients to discover new perspectives, challenge limiting beliefs, and approach challenges with an open mind.

So, what has curiosity got to do with presence? Let’s start with what coaching presence is. As the term suggests, it's all about being completely present and engaged in the moment with our clients. No distractions, no judgments, just as safe and supportive space for growth and exploration. When we master presence, we build trust and empathy, setting the stage for some serious breakthroughs!

Now, let's talk about curiosity. Remember how as kids, we were bursting with curiosity about everything around us? It's time to bring that childlike wonder into our coaching. When we approach our clients with genuine curiosity, we show them that we truly want to understand their unique perspectives, values, and dreams. By asking thought-provoking questions, we ignite their inner curiosity and empower them to challenge their own limiting beliefs, opening doors to new possibilities they never thought possible.

But curiosity is just one side of the coin. The other side is caring. When we genuinely care about our client’s well-being, we create a safe and nurturing space for them to explore their deepest thoughts and emotions. Through active listening, empathy, and real compassion, we let them know that we've got their back. This caring presence paves the way for vulnerability and growth, making our coaching sessions the ultimate transformative journey!

So, whilst presence in coaching is everything, it's fueled by the power of curiosity and caring. When we embody this compassionate curiosity, we create an environment where genuine connections are made, limitations are shattered, and lives are transformed.

As you continue honing your coaching practice, if you focus on nothing else, I encourage you to embrace compassionate curiosity. Let your inner child's curiosity shine through and build authentic connections with your clients. Show them that you genuinely care about their journey, supporting them every step of the way.

Let’s all make a world of difference in the world.

Until next month
