The Challenge of Succession Planning

The Challenge of Succession Planning

What makes CEO succession planning such a challenge for CEOs and Boards?

Why do some well suited candidates not make it on to the shortlist?

And why the "natural successor" isn't always the right choice?

According to an article by Harvard Business Review, some of the reasons include:

- The power of the heir apparent.

- Likability counts more than it should.

- The safe choice can sometimes be irresistible.

Instead, some tactics that should be used are:

- A CEO scorecard linked to business strategy.

- A broader and deeper lens on the leadership bench. This can be enhanced by having a diverse range of Board members.
