BILL VAUGHAN'S TASTY CLIPS: Jodie Turner-Smith Stars In New Look At 'Anne Boleyn'
Jodie Turner-Smith, the striking actress who starred in movies âQueen & Slimâ and âWithout Remorseâ with Michael B. Jordan, gives a mesmerizing performance as one of Englandâs notorious queens in âAnne Boleyn,â a new three-part psychological thriller making its U.S. debut Dec. 9 on AMC+.
The groundbreaking drama, marking the first time the historical figure has been played by a Black actor, explores the final months of Boleyn's life from her perspective, as she struggles to secure a future for her daughter and to challenge the powerful patriarchy closing in around her.
âI definitely anticipated that there were going to be people that felt a certain way about it,â said Turner-Smith at this yearâs Cannes Film Festival as reported by Variety. âI think weâve seen for years and years that in theater we have characters being played by people of all different ethnicities, but I think definitely in a medium like television or film itâs something we see much less. But I thought it was so interesting that the producers wanted to do something where they did this sort of identity-conscious casting instead of casting somebody based on what color their skin is.
âI think it is the function of art to tell stories in a way that pushes people to see things differently,â she added. âI think as a Black artist in this moment in time, I definitely want to be part of showing people a world that looks different than what they have historically been allowed to see.â
The âcanât-miss television eventâ with remaining episodes being released on consecutive Thursdays, features a superb ensemble cast including Emmy and BAFTA Award nominated actor Paapa Essiedu (âI May Destroy You,â âGangs of Londonâ) as Anneâs brother and Tudor nobleman George Boleyn. Mark Stanley (âGame of Thronesâ) is Boleynâs husband King Henry VIII, and Lola Petticrew (âBloodlandsâ) is Anneâs love rival, Jane Seymour.
