For decades, the concept of an artificial intelligence that matches or exceeds human cognitive abilities has captured the imagination of scientists, artists, and society. As we make rapid strides in narrow AI systems tailored for specific tasks, many of the world's top minds are turning their focus toward the immense challenge of achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) - a machine with the general reasoning, learning, and flexible problem-solving capabilities of the human mind.

With the potential to revolutionize fields from healthcare to energy to education, AGI represents one of the most profound technological developments humanity may realize. However, creating superintelligent AGI also raises complex philosophical, ethical, and existential questions we must grapple with. What is AGI?

The 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey introduced the rogue AI system HAL 9000, raising questions about machine consciousness that continue to linger today.

In the 1980s-90s, The Terminator and The Matrix franchises took a more ominous view, portraying AGIs as an emerging threat that could dominate or destroy humanity itself. More recent films like Her in 2013 and Ex Machina in 2014 have explored more nuanced perspectives, including AGIs becoming romantic partners or raising thought-provoking ethical questions.

Even in the art world, we've seen early experimentation with using artificial intelligence as a collaborator rather than just a tool. The 1994 album Neroli by musician Brian Eno incorporated an early proto-AGI system to generate ambient musical elements.

AI Impacts Survey In an effort to systematically forecast when "high-level machine intelligence" may arrive, AI Impacts surveyed 2,778 leading AI researchers in 2022 who had published peer-reviewed work that year. Their aggregate predictions estimated a 50% chance we develop systems that can outperform humans across disciplines by 2047, with a 10% chance by 2027. This reflects a noticeable shift towards expecting AGI sooner compared to their 2021 survey.


The Open Philanthropy Project Analysis This organization's assessment estimates a 19% chance of transformative artificial intelligence capable of recursive self-improvement by 2036, and a 65% chance by 2060.

Anthropic AI Model "Grace" When Anthropic's own AI model Grace was asked, it calculated a 42% likelihood of AGI being developed by 2040 and a 67% chance by 2060 based on its analysis.

Metaculus Prediction Community The aggregated forecast from this group gives a 22% chance of achieving AGI by 2040 and a 48% chance by 2060.

AI Roadmap Institute Analysis Under what they classify as an "ambitious" scenario with favorable research conditions, this institute estimates a 10% chance of AGI arising by 2035, 33% by 2050, and 50% chance by 2060.

Geoffrey Hinton:

- Originally estimated 30-50 years for AI to overtake human intelligence.

- Revised to predict 5-20 years but "without much confidence.


Shane Legg (DeepMind):

- Estimates 50% chance AGI will be developed by 2028.


Dario Amodei (Anthropic):

- Expects "human-level" AI in 2-3 years by 2025-2026.


Sam Altman (OpenAI):

As incredible as the benefits of artificial general intelligence could be, unlocking this new era of computational minds faces immense scientific and philosophical challenges that even AGI's most optimistic proponents acknowledge must be overcome, including:

Mastering the Full Scope of Human Cognition  

Building a system with the generalized reasoning and intellectual capabilities of the human mind across all domains and contexts represents an unprecedented computational challenge. Current AI systems still fall short of matching the depth and breadth of human perception, emotional intelligence, reasoning, and general problem-solving that an AGI would require.

Establishing a Theoretical Framework

Despite decades of research, we still lack an established theoretical framework or working protocol to develop AGI systems that can autonomously understand and make decisions in the world around them. Existing approaches like symbolic logic or neural networks fall short in fully replicating general intelligence.

Communication and Grounding

For AGIs to interact with and navigate the world naturally like humans, they need human-like communication skills to comprehend nuanced context and meaning. They must also develop artificial perception and "grounding" in the physical world rather than being disembodied intelligences. Overcoming the "symbol grounding" problem that separates computational reasoning from reality is seen as key.

Ethical Alignment

Alex Velinov I think the problem to estimating is that there are many dimensions to intelligence. One of them is speed. Think about it. If somebody can fix a new problem in a day and another in a year, you call the first person smarter. Then is the depth. Then emotional, visual, spatial, logical, pattern recognition, etc. If we do it that way, we'll find that AI already exceeds us in many areas (by a lot), and is still quite short in others. And who can say which area is more important? It's an ambiguous problem.

AGI is achievable now by combining different systems together and accepting that general intelligence doesn't have to be perfect intelligence.
