Aquaterra Turns 25. Come Celebrate with us on the Brahmaputra River

Aquaterra was founded in 1995 and is hurtling into its 25th year. A quarter century as a front runner in opening new trips. Audacious trips, and continuing to conceive, promote and operate them with a team that is now nearly, a 100 strong. With a crew dedicated to running trips with consistency, high standards of delivery and top notch safety, we dedicate this period most of all, to guests who have patronized us for these long years, encouraged us to do more and more, pushed us to launch new departures and been a constant support through the years.

One of our signature trips is also celebrating its 25th year anniversary, and it is none other than the mighty Siang expedition. Our founder was on it as early as 1994, and Aquaterra began regular expeditions in 2002, and been running it since. Big has new meaning on the Siang, and it takes you through the mighty rainforests of north east India, with its amazing culture, simplicity, diversity and great natural heritage.

Western explorers and travelers in the Tsang Po gorges owe a debt of gratitude to those who have preceded them, from the region’s earliest inhabitants – the Mishmi and Abor people who moved into the gorges from the south and east centuries ago, and later arrivals like the Monpa – to the small and steady stream of Buddhist pilgrims who have been traveling to the region they call ‘Pemako” or ‘Lotus of Great bliss”, since the 16th century.

Between 1880 and 1889, Kinthup, a Sikkimese explorer launches a four year odyssey to chart the Tsang Po gorges, up the valley we will be traveling.

Kinthup’s expedition report places a 150 foot waterfall on the Yarlung Tsangpo. Waterfalls on the river will intrigue explorers for more than 100 years!

The Eastern Himalayas in South Asia is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, and now there are more than 200 new species known to science to prove the point — among them, a blue-eyed frog, a “bejeweled” pit viper and a fish that can live out of water for four days. Between 2009 and 2014, according to a new report released on World Habitat Day by the World Wildlife Fund, scientists working with a variety of organizations and research institutions discovered 133 plants, 39 invertebrates, 26 fish, 10 amphibians, one reptile, one bird and one mammal in the Eastern Himalayas.

Travel with us on the Siang expedition, our 25th year dedication over Nov 23-Dec 4, 2019.
