The 2024 Paradox
We got a decade of activity in 2023 with Chat GPT exploding into the scene, becoming the fastest growing product in the history of tech. Not only that, we had some amazing advancements in image generation and at the tail end of 2023, great progress towards generative video. It's tough to stay ahead. Here's my take on what's really important for 2024, plus my live stream announcement.
The most important developments in 2024?
Open AI and Chat GPT grew up fast in 2023, with everything from web access, plugins, custom GPTs and image generation coming and going in and out and back into the platform. One of the big things to watch out for in 2024 will be a stabilization of the platform and regulation and lawsuits making a big impact on the tools. We saw the Biden administration releasing an executive order on AI Safety.
The problem with executive orders is that they don't have a lot of staying power. What does is a lawsuit like the recently announced New York Times suit against both Microsoft and OpenAI. What's interesting about this suit is the depth of research and some of the information that has come out as a result. I expect NYT and others to continue the onslaught against AI and in a way stabilize what the capabilities of these platforms are. We're going to get answers this year.
Accurate Generative AI
Generative AI technologies are going to continue to improve at an accelerated rate. Take a look at these images from Yubin that highlight the history of how quickly MidJourney has advanced.
Midjourney is far ahead other generative AI tools, except in one place and that's UI. Something they plan to change very soon with some early releases of an interface. This is the year those tools mature. Artists need UIs that make techniques like in-painting, out-painting, upscaling and background removal to be easy to use.
The big change late this year was the news that image prompting techniques are changing. One thing that has been difficult is to get these tools to generate accurately. Dalle*3 showed us how that's possible with this single image generation.
Yes, it's possible to be specific with your image prompts with ChatGPT and DALLâ¢E 3, but others like the industry leading MidJourney have lagged behind. Midjourney's ability to closely follow prompts has been severely limited. In this new version, they announced that what you know about prompting is going to change once this new version (V6) is fully rolled out.

Video Matures to Useful Levels
Generative Video is really trying to make some inroads, but it's where image generation was a few years ago. Tools like Pika labs show that it is possible to have the AIs create consistency over time, but so far, they can only generate a few seconds of mildly useful content. With a full year to progress, I think Generative Video can become a viable way to generate b-roll and short meme content. These tools are also going to aggregate into existing tools with one of my favorites Leonardo announcing the addition of motion tools to it's large image generation catalog of models.
How to Keep up!!!
Towards the end of last year, I focused on learning to record an edit with breakthrough AI tools from DeScript. So if you look at my library of content on LinkedIn: https://go.raybo.org/learn you can see a list of content that will form the basis of how I keep you up to date: Quick, but insightful content about Google's Project Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, the breakout technique that's going to dominate prompting this next year known as Multimodal Prompting, the most useful and probably underrated part of Chat GPT...The Code Interpreter/Advanced Data Analysis tool, and something that every person creating Custom GPTs with Chat GPT should be concerned about Prompt Hacking and Mitigation techniques.
But when that's not enough, I'm starting a new live stream this year called It's PlaiTime. My way of giving you even more, up to date and relevant content. I added a few pieces of sample content on Chat GPT's Hidden Search Engine as well as Organizing your Prompts. Those are topics I'll cover more in depth in the first episode of I'ts PlaiTime so don't miss the first episode and like and subscribe wherever possible.
It's PlaiTime will run throughout the year and the best way to keep track of it is to follow me on LinkedIn or keep your eyes on this newsletter. I'll be releasing even shorter, useful videos through my YouTube channel. I am allergic to hype, so expect honest, practical tips...Let's Plai!
