Days 1 to 4 – Flatdogs Camp, South Luangwa National Park

The South Luangwa is Zambia’s premier National Park and has been dubbed as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. The concentration of game along the Luangwa River and its associated Ox-bow lagoons is amongst the most intense one can find anywhere in Africa. It is home to two endemic species, the Thornicroft Giraffe and Cookson’s Wildebeest and is one of the best Parks in Africa to view leopards and wild dogs in their natural surroundings.

Flatdogs is a high standing Safari Lodge from which to enjoy South Luangwa Safaris and combines all the essentials needed when going on safari. Here you will find the rest and peace you need after an exciting safari day in combination with personalized service and a warm welcome by the camp’s team. You can continue with the drive in the dark which allows you to spot nocturnal animals. With advance notice day trips (with a packed lunch) can be arranged. Flatdogs Camp also offers walking safaris accompanied by a professional safari guide and an armed scout, usually during the drier months between about June and October.

Day 4 – Flight from Mfuwe Airport to Royal Airstrip in Lower Zambezi

On arrival at Royal Airstrip, a safari guide from Kasaka River Lodge will welcome you, help you with your luggage and transfer you to Kasaka River Lodge. This Lodge will be your home during your 4 days of safari in the Lower Zambezi National Park.

Days 4 to 7 – Kasaka River Lodge, Lower Zambezi National Park

The Lower Zambezi National Park lies nestled between an impressive escarpment to the north and the mighty Zambezi River to the South. The escarpment acts as a barrier for the game, keeping it on the plains and in the rich woodland on the bank of the river. The Park is rich in wildlife, with large herds of buffalo, and great elephant viewing available to most visitors. Lions are numerous and leopard sightings common.

Kasaka River Lodge is located in the Game Management Area on the Lower Zambezi National Park directly opposite the famed Mana Pools world heritage site in Zimbabwe and offers unusually varied activities such as game drives, walking, canoeing, boating and angling in the company of Africa’s finest guides. The Zambezi River extends the full length of the property which sits in the shade of tamarind trees some 50 ft above the river, affording it outstanding views.

Unlike the Luangwa, the Zambezi is navigable and the lodge offers a full variety of water activities alongside their standard walking and driving options: canoeing, walking and, of course, fishing. And for those interested in the rich cultural heritage of the area, community visits can be arranged.

Day 7 – Flight from Royal Airstrip to Livingstone

On this day, Kasaka River Lodge will transfer you back to Royal Airstrip for your flight to Livingstone which passes via Lusaka International Airport.

On arrival at Livingstone Airport, a representative from Zambezi Sun Hotel will welcome you, help you with luggage and transfer you to the hotel. You will be at Zambezi Sun Hotel for 2 nights and this is the time to enjoy the viewing the wondrous Victoria Falls.

Days 7 to 9 – Zambezi Sun Hotel, Livingstone & Victoria Falls

The Zambezi Sun is a high-level resort hotel with an informal atmosphere, and a colourful, fun design throughout. The closest hotel to the Victoria Falls, it’s really all about the location as you’re just 5 minutes walk from one of the Natural Wonders of the World. Entrance to the Falls is included for guests staying at the Zambezi Sun, and you can visit as many times as you like!

On the sprawling property, just a few minutes from the main hotel complex, is also the Falls Entertainment Centre. Here you’ll find an informal a la carte restaurant, a small café, a few craft and souvenir shops, as well as an activity centre – which is also generally a pick up point for many of the activities such as white water rafting etc.

Many of the numerous activities available at the Falls can be booked and paid for prior to your arrival at the hotel, but there is an Activity Desk at the hotel reception where these can be arranged locally and added to your bill to be paid for at the end of your stay.

Day 9 – Transfer from Livingstone to Chobe National Park

On this day, you will get onto a road transfer from Zambezi Sun Hotel in Livingstone to Chobe Safari Lodge in Chobe National Park, Botswana. This is a cross-boarder transfer and you might have to pay visa fees for Botswana if applicable.

On arrival at Chobe Safari Lodge, the staff will welcome you and check you into the room – your stay at this lovely lodge will be for 3 nights.

Day 9 to 12 – Chobe Safari Lodge, Chobe National Park

Undoubtedly one of Africa’s most beautiful rivers, the Chobe supports a diversity and concentration of wildlife unparalled anywhere else in Botswana. Chobe Safari Lodge is a large, international style lodge, situated in the town of Kasane in north east Botswana. As one of the first lodges built in Kasane, it has a prime spot next to the Chobe National Park, overlooking the wide Chobe River.

Activities from Chobe Safari Lodge include morning and afternoon game drives along the riverfront area of the national park, boat cruises on the Chobe River and fishing trips. Take a river cruise and you’ll experience the park, and the animals, from another vantagepoint. Here you’ll get up close and personal with hippo, crocodile, elephant and a mind-boggling array (over 460 species) of birds.

Driving the loops that hug the river’s edge, you may see up to 15 different species of animals on any one game drive, including waterbuck, lechwe, puku, giraffe, kudu, roan and sable, impala, warthog, bushbuck, monkeys and baboons, along with the accompanying predators lion, leopard, hyena and jackal. The prolific wildlife is generally very used to vehicles, and so many of the individual animals are relaxed, which often allows for great photographic opportunities.

Day 12 – transfer from Chobe Safari Lodge to Kasane Airport

On this day, you will be transferred to Kasane Airport where you will catch your international flight going back home. This marks the end of your safari with us but we will contact you after you have arrived back home to get the feedback about your entire trip and to make sure that you arrived home safely.

A guide on what to bring with on your safari

Please bear in mind that you may experience different temperature changes depending on the time of the year that you undertake your travel but it is usually warmer/hotter in summer.

• A hat, sunglasses, high strength sun block, moisturizers, lip salve, and insect repellent should be carried.

• Binoculars

• Glasses – if you wear prescription glasses bring a spare pair. If you wear contact lenses bring a pair of glasses as well since dust can be a problem.

• Clothes: All our camps have a daily laundry service. Try to make your clothes khaki or neutral in colour. (Dark colours stand out less in the bush than light ones). Loose clothes are preferable and a sweater or light jacket is useful at most times of the year. Bring your swimsuit to make use of the pools at Kapani and Mchenja.

• Sandals or open shoes are useful but bring a comfortable covered pair for walking in. On walking safaris, comfort is more important than “big and sturdy” so trainers are ideal.

• Camera equipment – This is obviously very personal but a good zoom is always useful. If using 35mm then some fast film for night time shots and LOTS of extra films. If using digital then extra memory sticks although we will be happy to help you download and store your shots. If using video then bring spare batteries although charging facilities are available in all our camps.

• Money – No money will be needed whilst on safari apart from departure taxes and most guests like to leave staff gratuities at the end of their stay - this can be in any currency. US Dollars are best for paying visas and departure taxes at airports although local currency and Sterling are also accepted. Be sure to bring US$ notes with "large heads" – the old series with small heads are not accepted anywhere in Zambia.

• A torch can be useful when staying at bush camps.
