World Bee Day is celebrated on May 20. On this day Anton Janša, the pioneer of beekeeping, was baptized in 1734. The purpose of the international day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem. Did you know that a bee lives less than 40 days, visits at least 1000 flowers and produces less than a teaspoon of honey, but for her, it is the work of a lifetime. Bees are dying from weed killer sprayed on what we see as weeds, but what nature sees as food. Weeds, flowers and fruit trees are bees only source of food. There are far more weeds than flowers or fruit trees, so it's their constant food source. Bees are humanity's survival. Happy International Day of Forests 🌲 🌳 There will be many people more qualified than me offering intelligent insights into the astonishing power of forests to fight climate change, support sustainable communities and transform human health. In the interest of levity, here are 3 fun forest facts for you to share with your friends on a wholesome walk through the woods (or in the pub): - Trees exhibit a phenomenon called "crown shyness", leaving visible gaps in the canopy. We don't fully understand why they do this, but it's good to know that humans aren't the only species suffering from unspecified anxiety. - The incredible African Baobab tree can hold up to 120,000 litres of water in its trunk. Their fruit is known as "monkey bread" and is delicious in smoothies. Unlike monkeys. Or bread. - The Dwarf Willow (Salix herbacea) is the smallest tree in the world. Despite only growing to a few centimetres tall, they produce a single woody stem with branches (plus a fun red/yellow flower), making it just as much a tree as the mightiest oak.

There is no species in the world that would destroy its own habitat, so let's not destroy our environment for temporary gain, forgetting where we'll be living tomorrow. Over 25% of global mortality is associated with environmental factors, including excessive heat, poor air and water quality, the spread of disease and food shortages. We are using up 50% more natural resources than the Earth can provide. At our current population, we need 1.5 Earths, which we do not have. Let’s take this opportunity to reconsider the way we see our environment and its position among our priorities. Let’s not run after other things while ignoring the most important: our environment. 🌱🌍 Celebrating World Soil Day! 🌳 Look closely at these two trees! 🌿 One planted just last year and the other very recently. We checked today and they are both the same height, the growth of the 4 month old sapling is remarkable! But how has this happened? 🌱🌳 The secret lies beneath our feet—in the soil! 🌍💧 We ran a series of experiments this year, treating the soil from different sample plots with various nutrients during this year's planting season - and that has made all the difference! I woke up early this morning feeling poetic, and inspired by the many negative influences people persistently exert on the natural environment. I decided to chanel the creative vibe I felt at the time, into writing a poem; and this is the result. What do you think would be a befitting title for this free verse? People are invasive species; Intelligent agents of destruction; We have altered everything we contact; Propelled by profit, hence we take and trash; Creating chaos through our contraptions; Continually taking without reciprocating; We have upset nature's ability to nurture; Risking our very existence and our future; However, humanity is not hopeless; We only need more healers and helpers; Growers and gardeners and guardians of nature; To restore the trees and seas and bees and seeds; And clean up our soils and systems and societies; We must propagate our farms and flora and fauna; Perfect symbiosis and sustainability and circularity; It's either we shelve our selfishness or self-destruct.

What is it with Sparrow Day? It is an honour and raises awareness about the plight of these beloved birds whose populations are dwindling at an alarming rate. You must have known its importance from the movie - 2.0 The humble sparrow has been our delightful companion for centuries, but environmental degradation now threatens their very existence. Observed annually on March 20th, World Sparrow Day serves as a clarion call to individuals, governments, and scientific communities worldwide to unite and implement decisive measures to conserve sparrows and safeguard their natural habitats. This year's poignant theme, "I LOVE Sparrows," reflects our profound affection for these feathered friends and aims to inspire a broader movement dedicated to ensuring their survival. Their presence enriches our lives, and their well-being is inextricably linked to the health of our entire ecosystem. While World Sparrow Day traces its origins back to 2010, the urgency of this cause has only intensified with each passing year. Sparrows, once among the most ubiquitous birds on our planet, now face the grim reality of potential extinction due to the relentless march of urbanization and habitat loss. Being aware will help to make necessary steps to protect them.
