The world’s population is more than three times larger than it was in the mid-twentieth century. The global human population reached 8.0 billion in mid-November 2022 from an estimated 2.5 billion people in 1950, adding 1 billion people since 2010 and 2 billion since 1998. The world’s population is expected to increase by nearly 2 billion people in the next 30 years, from the current 8 billion to 9.7 billion in 2050 and could peak at nearly 10.4 billion in the mid-2080s. The recent announcement from the WHO Director-General declares MPOX outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. I've spent much of my time helping jurisdictions detect & prepare for two things: Widespread infectious disease outbreaks and a disruptive bioterrorism event. Both are complex, ongoing events. Both require enormous resources and coordination. There's dozens of vital steps we must take and strengthen. Surveillance is critical for the timely detection, management, and containment of infectious disease outbreaks. By identifying the sources and chains of transmission, we can quickly isolate cases and prevent further transmission. However, gaps in surveillance during an outbreak can be costly. Real-time data collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination to stakeholders, as well as risk communication and community engagement are essential for driving timely responses and halting epidemics at their source, preventing cross-border transmission. As a first responder during the 2022 Ebola outbreak, I spent a significant amount of time investigating cases and identifying transmission chains to prevent further spread. Today, I am pleased to continue contributing significantly to Uganda's emergency response. In the ongoing Mpox response, I have served in different capacities including supervising FETP fellows conducting case investigations and currently supporting surveillance activities in Mityana District as an epidemiologist under WHO. Surveillance remains the backbone of any effective outbreak response and resilient health system, and I am committed to working with communities to strengthen these systems and prepare for future public health threats. «Estimating the time of HPAI virus introduction on individual farms provides valuable information for epidemiologic investigations and outbreak response and is beneficial for the different stakeholders in outbreak management. This has been demonstrated during the response to the two large HPAI outbreaks in the U.S. where the analyses played a key role in supporting rapid field tracing and epidemiological investigations to identify and rule out potential routes of exposure by facilitating the narrowing down of the time window of possible virus introduction for each flock. On the producers’ end, knowing the estimated TOI on their own farms is beneficial for their individual understanding of; 1) how they became infected, 2) gaps that might exist in their biosecurity plans and, 3) knowing what risky practices they may be engaging in accidentally or intentionally. On the other hand, cumulative TOI results over the course of an outbreak benefit regulators, epidemiological investigators, academicians and researchers by facilitating the understanding of how outbreaks are expanding, how viruses might be changing and how outbreak response needs to adapt.
