The link between social connection and health outcomes is as clear as day. Research shows that socially connected individuals lead longer lives, they experience better physical and mental health, and overall well-being. And what better an opportunity than to connect with a new parent or caregiver who are more likely to experience social isolation and perinatal depression. I am Prevention. You are prevention. Thank you, Apex Benefits, for highlighting National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month! Here are some significant facts, cited from the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants website: - Approximately 23% of all adults in the U.S. have a mental illness - Although rates of mental illness in some BIPOC groups are comparable or slightly lower than in White people, mental illness among BIPOC is likely to be more persistent and BIPOC often bear a disproportionately high burden of disability resulting from mental illnesses. Research suggests that a lack of culturally sensitive screening tools that detect mental illness, coupled with structural barriers could contribute to underdiagnosis of mental illness among people of color. - People who identify as being two or more races (25%) are most likely to report any mental illness within the past year than any other race/ethnic group. - In 2022, among adults with any mental illness, Hispanic (40%), Black (38%), and Asian (36%) adults were less likely than White adults (56%) to receive mental health services. Let's work together to change the stigma! #NationalMinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth #BIPOC #DEI #MentalHealth #EmployeeBenefits

Speaker spotlight! Short Abstract of session: "Perinatal and Infant mental health outcomes are recognized as intertwined; however, discussions about one frequently only briefly mention the other. The available research suggests that the bond between a new parent and infant are drastically impacted by one another. PMADs are considered to have detrimental effects on infants' formation of their attachment with their primary caregivers. Conversely, positive interactions with their baby have shown to have regulatory effects on caregivers suffering from PMADs. Further, as more positive interactions occur, they build on establishing a secure attachment. As we, as providers, use attachment to both identify and intervene with PMADs, we have a chance at reducing the unwanted or harmful effects that PMADs can have on the entire family system."
