Seagrass meadows are true heroes of the ocean. They support and protect thousands of marine species, contribute to food security by providing essential nursery habitats for fish species that millions of coastal people depend on, and play a crucial role in carbon capture and storage. Protecting these vital ecosystems is not just about conservation, it's about establishing a healthy balance between people and nature, which is why we are excited to collaborate on the Vanga Seagrass Project, with Edinburgh Napier University, ACES and local Kenyan communities. The project is aimed at protecting and restoring seagrass ecosystems in Kenya while testing innovative funding approaches to sustainable finance. This should not only safeguard biodiversity but also create a positive feedback loop for environmental recovery and sustainable development for communities with few options. In areas where environmental protection can support development, our commitment to testing new approaches is key to unlocking sustainable solutions for future generations.ð± The Association for Coastal Ecosystem Services Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance #Seagrass #conservation #ClimateAction #biodiversity #nature

SADC-GMIâs core mandate is to promote sustainable groundwater management and provide solutions to groundwater challenges across the SADC region for improved livelihoods and socio-economic development.
Celebrating #WorldWetlandsDay! At SADC-GMI, we reflect on the profound connection between wetlands and human well-being. These vital ecosystems, often overlooked, act as nature's purifiers, playing a crucial role in ensuring clean water and fostering rich biodiversity. In our region, Southern Africa, nearly 25% of wetlands have faced significant degradation, impacting the delicate balance of our ecosystems. This World Wetlands Day, let's unite for conservation. Governments, businesses, and individuals all play a crucial role in supporting policies, restoration projects, and sustainable practices to safeguard these invaluable ecosystems. Wetlands are not just nature's treasures; they are an investment in our future. At SADC-GMI, our commitment to sustainable groundwater management goes hand in hand with the preservation of these vital wetlands. Join us in taking collective action for a harmonious balance between nature and human existence.Â

Mangroves are essential ecosystems offering a myriad of benefits: biodiversity support, coastal protection, climate change mitigation, and livelihoods for coastal communities. Preserving them is crucial. Governments should enact policies for protection and restoration, engage communities through education, invest in research, and implement integrated coastal management. Individuals can contribute by supporting restoration projects, practicing responsible tourism and fishing, advocating for mangrove conservation, and participating in community initiatives and businesses should incorporate mangrove conservation into their CSR initiatives. Let's unite to safeguard mangroves, ensuring resilient coastal ecosystems and thriving communities. ð¿ Photo credit: McKinsey & Company #MangroveConservation #EnvironmentalProtection #sustainability #climatechange #karachi
