Did you know for some clients I have been working with once or twice a week I still need to remind them of my name and also let them know why I am visiting them? Memory loss is one of the signs of dementia, and people who are experiencing memory loss also have some problems with communication skills, visual perception, attention and concentration abilities. 'Losing our minds - a 21st century phenomenon' Explanation - explosion in information that results in disorganisation of the human mind - in confusion which accelerates neurodegenerative disease - the connection between brain and mind. The mind needs to be able to think straight in order for the brain to be cared for. Why? if we consider the brain an electrical circuit - then inconsistencies result in short circuits. Short circuits 'blow' the brain. Wisdom (from this perspective) is therefore clearly protective. Enforced Moral/Logical consistency.
Mental illness and dementia: it's a little known connection but both are rapidly growing. NeuRA's CEO and Institute Director, Professor Matthew Kiernan AM, explores the links between the two high prevalence, high impact, growing and linked brain conditions in an Op Ed published on the NeuRA website today. Prof Kiernan links this to the #dementia series launched last week in partnership with The Lancet Regional Health - Western Pacific, and calls for investment in a multi-sectoral, collaborative consortia â at both national and international levels â to reduce the growing burden of these interconnected issues.
