I am happy to share that the latest addition to the Children's Trust Fund Alliance's "What Parents Say About... " series is now available: What Parents Say Aboutâ¦.Supporting Families Rather than Reporting Them: Changing Mandated Reporting Policies and Practices.  This important and timely publication elevates the wisdom and voices of parents with life experiences involving the mandated reporting system. Parents are speaking out about how mandated reporting can cause trauma to children and families. This brief is designed to inform state and community leaders, Strengthening Families Network members, policymakers, early childhood leaders and other systems leaders about how: - Families who need support often get investigated â not supported, and this leads to a fear of seeking needed supports and services. - Improvements need to be made to mandated reporting laws, policies, and practices so that fewer families are subjected to unwarranted investigations, particularly those related to poverty that could be addressed through other supports. - It is our communities, including educators, neighbors, medical professionals and service providers who are valuable resources for connecting families to supports that will help strengthen them and prevent future problems from developing. - Mandated reporting laws, practices and trainings can be revised to create more opportunities for those connected to families to be able to offer greater supports. - Ensuring that parents who have needed support and who might be affected by reporting laws and policies are involved in helping to shape future directions. This publication includes the voices of parents in the Alliance's Birth Parent National Network and its other parent networks who helped develop a call to action and recommendations for needed changes. Mandated reporting was designed to protect children, but it's fraught with misnomers. Many believe they must report everything (including poverty which is NOT the same as neglect / abuse) leading to countless unnecessary and traumatic investigations. Families seeking help for basic needs like food, shelter, and clothing are often reported and investigated instead of receiving the support they desperately need. Research shows that a significant number of reports stem from biases, particularly against low-income families, minoritized groups, and people with disabilities. These reports often result in unwarranted surveillance rather than the intended protection. For instance, Black families are disproportionately affected, with 53% experiencing a CPS investigation before their child's 18th birthday. (Yeah, read that again . . . more than half of Black families!) Instead of helping, these actions increase fear and trauma, deterring families from seeking help. As highlighted in the fantastic brief in the post below, we can and should support people without reporting them. More reporting doesn't lead to better detection of maltreatment or improved outcomes. Let's provide accessible services and focus on preventive measures so we can help families make informed decisions and keep children safely at home where they belong! It's time to rethink mandated reporting and build a system that supports families with empathy and resources.

When geo-location apps also teach the communication and social-emotional skills to navigate tricky situations (from which we are trying to track and protect kids), I'll start considering their benefits. From my perspective and experience, they're less about safety and more about stalking and surveillance. Then there's that nebulous question about what age they're no longer 'needed' (like this is some kind of magic date in time). A great article that shows 4 different expert voices chiming in on the difficulties that spin off from tracking - Sahra O'Doherty, Ginger Gorman, Susan McLean - thanks for the opportunity to contribute Wendy Tuohy. https://lnkd.in/gDPRf97i
