Professional learning at conferences can take many forms, from 5 minute Ignite sessions and 15-minute short talks to one-hour skill-building or demonstration sessions to 2- or 3-day intensive workshops. I've always been a fan of longer sessions where you can dig deep into the learning, have time to process, reflect, practice, and learn from other participants, and take home substantial new knowledge and skills. The American Evaluation Association Summer Evaluation Institute is a great conference for evaluators in all career stages. And it is ALL professional development workshops. There's one full day pre-conference workshop and the rest are half-day workshops. 🎤Along with my colleague Elizabeth Grim, I'll be presenting the pre-conference workshop: It's not the plan, it's the planning: Strategies for Evaluation Plans. As a PR intern, finding the balance between work and personal goals is crucial for success. Here are some strategies that can help: 1. Prioritize Tasks: Create a daily or weekly schedule to prioritize tasks and allocate time for personal activities. 2. Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life to avoid burnout. This might include setting specific work hours and disconnecting after work. 3. Effective Communication: Communicate with your supervisor (placement host) about workload and deadlines to manage expectations and ensure you have time for personal pursuits. 4. Self-Care: Make time for self-care activities such as exercise, hobbies, and spending time with loved ones to recharge and maintain well-being. 5. There is a skills gap between higher education and what it takes to be successful in the workforce. This “chronic skills gap” is particularly prevalent among community college graduates seeking employment. Harvard Business School reports that over 60% of employers believe these graduates lack the necessary skills and credentials for their companies, with only 36% of businesses considering them "work-ready." However, when students are equipped with a diverse set of knowledge, skills, and experiences, they are able to secure jobs, which foster long-term economic security and the ability to actively engage as citizens in their communities. Founded in 2020, Aspire Skill Development focuses on closing the skills gap for young professionals in Colorado and California. Our internship programs teach young professionals 7 key soft work skills necessary for success in the workforce, while providing opportunities to demonstrate leadership in their communities. We recognize that community colleges serve a wide demographic of students, of which over 50% come from minority and underserved student populations. With this in mind and as a commitment to equitable hiring practices, we have implemented an automatic interview policy for community college students to promote inclusivity and career opportunities for all students.
