This topic is one of many I will be covering in my upcoming book: Why NOT Me? The Female Guide to Entrepreneurship (working title). Another common thread that's emerging from nearly 30 interviews with women founders is their internal struggle with self-worth. That belief leads to a lack of confidence which in turn leads to charging less and giving away too much of their expertise for free. When we act on a perceived belief, it can positively or negatively impact the outcome. It's called #cognitivedissonance and according to a 2019 Forbes article, "it refers to the stress that ensues when a discrepancy exists between peopleâs beliefs and their behaviors. People want consistency, so theyâll work to reduce the stress by bringing their behaviors in line with their beliefs.â The good news: when you change your belief, you can change the outcome. My interview with Deanna Fusillo-Hinsz sums up her struggle with cognitive dissonance this way: "Overcoming my lack of confidence was hard. As a result, I didnât value my work and was literally giving it away. I thought that if I charged more, it meant that I wasnât being âniceâ. I had to make that shift to believing that I am worthy. I bring value. I deserve to charge more. We are all as good as we say we are.â How have you overcome negative self-talk? Thanks for making this connection between cognitive dissonance and self-worth. I believe that we can harness cognitive dissonance for our own self-growth in a powerful way. When we realize that our beliefs and actions don't align, we have the power to make a change for the better. Awareness is always the first step.
