âMoving from Me to Weâ Series: Growing middle leadership capacity, collaboration and care at the heart of our schools 1. The new series explained Following on from âThe Importance Ofâ series I posted earlier this year, which reflected on ten strands of school leadership, I am pleased to launch my next series this autumn. âMoving from Me to Weâ builds on a webinar I presented last year for ASCL senior leaders that explored why greater collaboration in schools is important, and how it might be encouraged. It certainly isnât easy, but building this collaborative mindset is worth the effort. The webinar was thought-provoking to write, drawing on contemporary research from education and beyond, with a healthy dose of my own thoughts and experiences as a senior leader. It went well and the ideas continue to shape our conversations at Oakham School. My intention is to focus on one key finding or insight from the webinar each post, to create a series that acts as a regular prompt for middle and senior leaders in schools - or any dynamic organisation - to pause and reflect for a moment. Do share your insights, it is always great to hear whether you agree or disagree and your context. Insight 1: Four arenas of collaboration The title âMe to Weâ can be interpreted in various different ways, and as the slides show I propose there are four arenas to focus on. Collectively I feel they bridge the divide that can exist between middle and senior leaders, a divide that is problematic if left unaddressed. Depending on your role, you may well have a different opinion as to why this gap exists, but whatever your perspective, efforts to bridge it from the top-down and the bottom-up are wise. I recently encountered it again in leadership classes and love that this is making its way into organizational discourse more broadly. The Power of Yet is about a growth mindset, which many leaders donât understandâ¦yet. When we think of growth mindset, we think it means having goals and growth plans for the future and making decisions that set us up for it. Sound familiar? [INVOLVEMENT DURING STUDY, IMPORTANT OR NOT?] During the current semester, my peers and I were tasked with developing a program centered around the theme of leadership. We have chosen to address the topic of "Navigating Success In Every Minute." This is for our core subject which is Leadership Communication. Throughout the duration of this program, the speaker emphasized that effective leadership entails the skillful balance of one's academic pursuits and co-curricular activities. A good leader have to know how to manage and balance their life. This involves not only excelling academically but also engaging in activities outside the traditional classroom setting such as sport, clubs and etc. In conclusion, being an active and great leader during your studies is a holistic investment in your personal and professional development. Â Such engagement facilitates the acquisition of invaluable skills, serves as a gateway to diverse opportunities, and establishes the path for a prosperous future.
