I had a wonderful discussion today with Neeta Jain, an engineer turned performance coach. I was interviewing her for the Corner Office 20 year update as I wanted to learn more about her research and experience with helping women to create more balance in their lives. This was one of the greatest challenges women talked about in the survey I conducted over the summer, so let me give you a preview of what will appear in the book on this topic. Thank you, Neeta, for these invaluable takeaways: 1. Stop "shoulding" all over yourself. Women don't have the balance they want because they are too busy pleasing others. Take a piece of paper each day and create two columns -- one "Should" and one "Could." As you think about your priorities, put them in one of the two columns. Put no more than 2 - 3 items in the "should column." 2. Identify your values and make certain you're living them. Too often women are so busy meeting everyone else's expectations of them, or they internalized what other people want FOR them, that they lose track of what is meaningful to them. If you're not living your values, how can you have balance? 3. Find a mentor who has walked in your shoes. You don't have to reinvent the wheel. Ask how she got to where she is and maintained her health and sanity in the process. 4. Assess why you're climbing the corporate ladder. Is it because you were told you should? Is it because you're trying to meet family expectations? Or are you truly doing it because it's what YOU want. If it's not the latter, then you're doing it for all the wrong reasons. 5. Relinquish perfectionism. Women burn out in part because they spend too much time trying to be perfect. It's a waste of time. An impossibility. Let good enough be good enough. Have you ever watched a guy vacuum a room or clean a bathroom? Now HE knows when good enough is good enough. (Don't blame Neeta for that one -- it's my editorialized version!)
