Whether it was for the tiny and scrappy non-profits I started or the large institution with major donor backing, getting to work on a proposal like this one takes grit, ingenuity, and a lot of self-care. For the teams preparing to submit your brilliant ideas to Pivotal Ventures, I hope you remember to: ❤️ Get outside. Don't get stuck at your desk or in the conference room. Get into nature, take walks, breathe fresh air. But also get outside your typical way of thinking and the boxes that we've had to conform to in order to win money. Consider what you can do differently this time to stand out and really disrupt the status quo! ❤️ Get with your people. Surround yourself with the people that nourish your creativity, ideas, and self-care. Get with the people who have the most lived experience of the problem you are trying to solve. Proposal writing can be lonely and a drag if you don't have people you love to work and play with around you. Good fundraising requires collaboration, solidarity, and fun! ❤️ Get inspired. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in writing a great proposal that we completely disconnect from the people and ideas that we are trying to win money for. Keep injecting yourself with healthy doses of inspiration -- from the work that your organization does, to the allies and co-conspirators that make up the movements you are part of. ❤️ Get nourished. Keep your body strong! Remember to eat. Drink water. Please please sleep! Fundraising is a huge cause of burnout. The last thing we need in the movement for social change, is a bunch of people that were once super motivated and are now too sick and tired to care. Now get going!

Women's Health in Nigeria Women's health in Africa is a complex and multifaceted issue influenced by cultural, socioeconomic, and systemic challenges. In Nigeria, these factors are particularly pronounced due to the combination of deeply ingrained cultural practices, poverty, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and limited awareness about women's health issues. One of the most pressing concerns in the realm of reproductive health is the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with a specific focus on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer. Advocacy, like the work I have been leading, has been crucial in addressing these issues and fostering change. Pivotal Ventures Challenges in Women's Health in Nigeria Cultural Barriers and Stigma In many parts of Nigeria, women’s health, especially reproductive health, is often overlooked or suppressed by societal norms. Topics like STIs and sexual health are considered taboo, making it difficult for women to seek proper care or discuss their health concerns openly. Women are sometimes perceived as second-class citizens in a patriarchal structure, where their health and rights are secondary to cultural expectations of motherhood and submission. This cultural stigma often prevents early detection of STIs and diseases like cervical cancer. Lever for Change Access to Healthcare Poverty and Economic Inequality The link between poverty and poor health outcomes is well-documented, particularly in low-income regions of Nigeria. Lack of Awareness and Education A significant factor in the prevalence of STIs and cervical cancer in Nigeria is the lack of knowledge and awareness about sexual and reproductive health. Many women are unaware of the importance of HPV vaccination or the need for regular cervical screenings. My Advocacy on Reproductive Health and HPV/Cervical Cancer As an advocate for women's health, my focus has been on reproductive health education and raising awareness of STIs, with a major emphasis on HPV and cervical cancer prevention. Over the past three years, I have led efforts in Oyo State, Nigeria, to increase awareness about these critical health issues. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Public Awareness Campaigns I have been actively involved in organizing and leading awareness campaigns across communities, focusing on educating young girls and women about HPV and cervical cancer. These campaigns emphasize the importance of early detection through regular screenings, as well as the availability of the HPV vaccine. By engaging women and girls in open conversations, we are slowly breaking the cultural stigma that surrounds sexual health topics. World Health Organization Health Education through Social Media My work extends to online platforms, where I moderate a health-focused page on Facebook, educating thousands of followers about sexually transmitted infections, HPV, and cervical cancer.
