Don't get hung up on job titles. A "better sounding" title doesn't necessarily mean it is a better job. It doesn't mean that the pay is better either. There are roles with "Manager" in the title that don't involve managing people. They are just individual contributors. A manager at one company may have a lot less responsibility than a data scientist at another. A job's title isn't some kind of direct mapping to pay, responsibilities, skills, quality of work, etc. across all companies. How important are job titles do you? I wanted to offer some advice to data science position applicants since I have recently been hiring. There are a lot of you! Do not be discouraged, just keep on applying. In general, resume quality I am seeing is very good, keep it to 1-2 pages. Standing out in the application process can be challenging, but here are some tips that can make a difference: - Highlight your relevant industry experience as it is crucial for your application - Certifications and public projects can enhance your profile, especially if you lack on-the-job experience with specific technologies - Remember, you need to appeal to both HR and the hiring manager to navigate the screening process successfully - If you are aiming for a remote job, consider the pros and cons of working across different locations. Being in the same time zone as the core team or leadership can be an advantage - Don’t get your heart set on one job. I wish I could write about more Life Sciences job ads. But honestly... most of them look the same. Hiring managers are complaining to recruitment agencies that applicants "aren't quite right for their needs", despite the plethora of talent available. But, the ads themselves haven't changed much over time, despite roles in Life Sciences becoming waaaaaaay more specific. But then, Nomic Bio came to the rescue. Here's what I love about their ad: 👇 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗼𝗸: It starts with, "doing for proteins what Illumina has done for DNA." Obsessed. They know their audience, and they’re writing for them. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: It details tasks like writing copy, running ads, and coordinating conferences. This gives a clear picture of what the job entails. No one likes "other duties as assigned." 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀: They talk about the challenges of joining a start-up, setting realistic expectations. Many small companies sugarcoat. Nomic’s ad builds trust by being honest about the work environment. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆: The tone of the ad matches the company's personality perfectly. It’s also written in a way that’s accessible to anyone. 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗱𝗲: The ad tells their story, from McGill University to partnering with pharma giants like GSK. A good transformation sticks with you faaaar longer than a list of facts. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲: They don’t bombard you with, “HERE ARE THE 27 THOUSAND THINGS WE NEED FROM YOU, OR ELSE. WITH ZERO INFORMATION IN RETURN.” 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: They speak directly to the reader with "you" statements. Makes you feel like the job is tailored just for you. “Why is nobody hiring junior data scientists these days?” I’ll tell you why. But you won’t like the answer. Companies aren’t hiring junior #datascientist candidates because they don’t have to. There are plenty of senior data scientists to choose from. Let’s face it, this is a saturated job market. People from all over are scrambling to make a career pivot into their #datascience dream job. Right now, the supply (qualified candidates) far outweighs the demand (job openings). Having the technical skills doesn’t make someone a marketable candidate. Hiring managers are picky because they can afford to be so. But — hear me — don’t lose heart! You can still compete against more experienced candidates and win the job. You’ve got to get creative. Stand out. Pick a niche and learn everything you can about it. Become laser focused on one industry, one company, one team of people who are solving the problems you care most about. And position yourself as the best potential teammate they could hope for. You don’t have to be the most experienced person out there. How to properly hire people with no data science experience… (And how to get hiring managers to take a chance on you.) Last year, I spent hours screening hundreds of applications and interviewing candidates. Here’s what I looked for when candidates didn’t have much experience: 📌 Did they complete any data science projects? Projects showed their skills. 📌 Are they passionate about data? I let them talk about their projects. Those who showed excitement stood out. 📌 Are they good communicators? They should explain concepts simply and clearly. 📌 Do they have strong problem-solving skills? I asked them to define problems and explain their approach. 📌 Are they open to learning and growing? I listened for times they learned new skills or tools to solve problems. Additional Considerations: 📌 Did they show initiative and work independently? 📌 How did they collaborate on teams and adapt to changing goals? ✨ Every career begins with a first step. You should never let the number of applicants on a LinkedIn job posting discourage you from applying. If you apply to the job, you have a better than 0% chance of getting the job. If you don’t apply, you have a 0% chance of getting the job. Furthermore, a lot of worthwhile things in life are competitive. Imagine if you passed up on everything that a lot of people wanted. “I’m not going to try to book a reservation at this restaurant because everyone wants to eat there.” “I’m not going to try to buy tickets to the game because tickets may sell out quickly.” “I’m not going to try to register for this event because they may run out of spots quickly.” Do you see how silly it is to live life that way?
