A worthwhile read to start your week. The Congressional Black Caucus, for the 118th Congress, just released, "What Good Looks Like: A Corporate Accountability Report on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion". Here's the brief summary of this report: "This first-of-its-kind report to hold Fortune 500 companies â across all sectors â accountable to their commitments to advance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), as well as their pledges to racial equity investments following the death of George Floyd in 2020, is the initial step in a strategic effort to ensure the tools of opportunity are protected as we work to advance the work, wages, wealth and economic opportunity agenda." Last week, as part of the government spending bill passed in March, the U.S. House Office of Diversity and Inclusion was disbanded as attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are happening at every level of government. At times like these, it is vital for companies and organizations to focus on their own DEI policies and not rely on the public sector. DEI is vital to organizational success â as per The Hill, ââ¦when it comes to racial diversity, companies that donât practice racial diversity could alienate 30 percent of their talent pool â Black, Latino and Asian Americans. Women⦠make up 51 percent of that talent pool.â Janet Stovall, Global Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at NeuroLeadership Institute stated âThereâs no company thatâs going to make it and thrive in the world if you ignore essentially 80 percent of the talent pool⦠you run the risk of inhibiting your innovation.â Additionally, ââ¦93 percent of Black CEOs have advanced degrees, compared to 53 percent of white executives, and 1.6 more years of education than their white peers.â Not investing in DEI can effect the quality of your team and hinder your long-term success. #diversity #equity #inclusion #belonging #dei #deib #innovation #talentpool #success #executive #publicsector #privatesector https://lnkd.in/eZjcTAtq

These attacks on DEI and, in this case, the Baltimore mayor are not even subtle in their racism. There is an increasing boldness to speak and act with impunity at the expense of the humanity of our BIPOC colleagues. At MFR Coaching & Consulting we see this happening across organizations in our country - âredâ states and âblueâ. At the same time, many organizations are pulling back from their 2020 DEI and anti-racism commitments. Make it make sense. Our nation has not become any less racist in the few short years since George Floyd spurred so many organizations to make these commitments. I encourage everyone to have some hard conversations at work today. Be clear in recognizing the systemic power we have as organizations and the moral choices we have as leaders. Understand that divesting (or failing to invest to begin with) in DEI and anti-racism is complicity in the ongoing harm our BIPOC employees, customers, business partners and neighbors continue to face daily. Please donât be one of those organizations. Choose to honor the worth and value of the people you employ, serve, and sell your products to.
"What is motivating the backlash against diversity, equity and inclusion efforts is so apparent it almost feels foolish to point out." - Sarah Green Carmichael
