🌱🌍 Celebrating World Soil Day! 🌳 Look closely at these two trees! 🌿 One planted just last year and the other very recently. We checked today and they are both the same height, the growth of the 4 month old sapling is remarkable! But how has this happened? 🌱🌳 The secret lies beneath our feet—in the soil! 🌍💧 We ran a series of experiments this year, treating the soil from different sample plots with various nutrients during this year's planting season - and that has made all the difference! It's incredible to witness how proper soil treatment can work wonders. 🌿💪 In the race to regrow forests in West Africa, one significant challenge stands out—nutrient-depleted soils. 🌳🌍 Tackling this challenge head-on by nurturing and treating the soil can massively impact the speed and health of new forest growth. 🌱 On this World Soil Day, let's recognise the silent hero beneath our feet—the soil and that, to restore nature, we sometimes need to start from the ground up! 🌍💚 #WorldSoilDay #ForestRegeneration #SoilHealth #SustainableFuture #ClimateAction

The number that scares & motivates me. 5,100,000,000,000 m2 = 1% of our planet With Wildya our bold goal is to protect 1% of our planet's land & sea until 2030 by changing 300 mio people's lives. 😅 We are at 217 m2 Aiaiai. That's ambitious. The number scares & motivates me, so to torture me I put it as a constant reminder on my most visited place in my flat: My fridge. 🤯 Why it scares me: 0. That's just a lot of zeros, right there Not valued. Biodiversity & mental health still don't get the recognition & support that is needed, so this will be an uphill battle. 💪 Why it motivates me: It's a moonshot. I know that there is a 99,99999999999999% chance that I will not hit this, but I aim for it anyways. It's a compass. Because it takes most of my decisions for me, if an activity doesn't help us get there, I am not doing it. Nature needs it. We need to protect & restore 30% of our planet by 2030 to avoid tipping points; the % needs to come from somewhere. People need it. For humans to thrive, we benefit from all the free ecosystem services nature provides for us. Keeps me chasing. I have a clearer goal to run towards. Not alone. This goes beyond me. I can't pull this off by myself. I need to find people who believe in this vision of a wilder world as much as I do. People are doing it. Can we re-learn to co-exist? This heartwarming video of an elephant baby & man gives me hope that we can. Lately, I break my head around that. Co-existence. It is on my mind 24/7. We unlearned it, which is clear in:  ❌ how we devalue life ❌ how we treat species ❌ how we shape this planet  ❌ how we pretend to be the only species  ❌ how we keep taking without giving back How did we get so off the path? And how can we go back? I don't have the answer. Sorry. 💚 But when I see clips like this, they give me hope.  💚 People who are full of love & empathy for a single animal or species.  💚 And the animals returning this love & respect. Not all humans will feel such strong emotions when it comes to nature, but I hope that we all re-learn to respect life. Respect life beyond our species. You must have known its importance from the movie - 2.0 The humble sparrow has been our delightful companion for centuries, but environmental degradation now threatens their very existence. Observed annually on March 20th, World Sparrow Day serves as a clarion call to individuals, governments, and scientific communities worldwide to unite and implement decisive measures to conserve sparrows and safeguard their natural habitats. This year's poignant theme, "I LOVE Sparrows," reflects our profound affection for these feathered friends and aims to inspire a broader movement dedicated to ensuring their survival. Their presence enriches our lives, and their well-being is inextricably linked to the health of our entire ecosystem. While World Sparrow Day traces its origins back to 2010, the urgency of this cause has only intensified with each passing year. Sparrows, once among the most ubiquitous birds on our planet, now face the grim reality of potential extinction due to the relentless march of urbanization and habitat loss. Several global celebrities have thrown themselves into saving bee colonies because, like us, they see their critical importance to the planet. The economic contribution of bees in the European Union is estimated at €14.2 billion per year. 🐝  To collect 1 kg of honey, bees fly a distance equal to 4 times around the earth. 🐝 Already in antiquity, the healing effects of honey were known, in the so-called Ebers Papyrus from around 1500 B.C. There are instructions for the preparation of medicines, honey was also found in the tombs of the pharaohs and was also used as one of the ingredients in embalming preparations. 🐝  Albert Einstein said: 'If bees disappeared on earth, humans would have only 4 years to live.' 🌍 Happy Earth Day! 🌿 Today, as we celebrate our planet and reflect on ways to protect and preserve its natural beauty, I thought I would share something I recently learnt about trees. When trees are cut down in a forest or woodland area, something incredible happens... You would think it's the end of the road for that tree stump, right? But, that's not the case at all. Thanks to an amazing network of underground fungal threads called Mycelium, neighbouring trees come to the stumps rescue, sending life-saving substances and nutrients to support the survival of the remaining tree stump. This phenomenon, known as the "wood wide web," is a fascinating example of nature's resilience and cooperation. Trees, it turns out, are not just solitary beings, but rather part of a complex community where they communicate and support one another in times of need. What's truly remarkable is that trees don't discriminate based on species. They don't just extend a helping hand to their own kind but also to trees of other species, demonstrating a remarkable level of altruism and mutual aid in the natural world. As we celebrate Earth Day and contemplate our role in protecting the environment, let's remember the lessons we can learn from the forest. We all have earth stewardship in our ancestry. A lot of discourse tells us "humans are bad for the planet" and that we are destructive but this is an unhelpful narrative. Humans are animals and all animals have a role in the delicate balance of eco-systems. For most of human history, we have lived in tune with the land and the plants and animals we share it with. All of us have ancestors who had close ties to the land where they were born and learned to survive. We can all reconnect to that role as stewards of the land. Many believe that nature would be better off if humans left it alone and didn't interfere - that to rewild or conserve nature, we need to drive humans out of it. However, Indigenous communities know that people can help nature to thrive - through techniques like foraging, controlled fires and companion planting for example. This is not the time to distance ourselves further from nature, it's the time to reclaim our roles as an innate part of it. #Nature #Biodiversity #EarthDay
